Hey all I have a question if anyone can answer it, it would be greatly appreciated! Now that i have my green card is it possible to apply for a US passport? I'm just curious at this point, but I want to travel back to Canada to be with my daughter when she gives birth to my first grandchild in Feb, so was just wondering if I could get a US passport or do I have to wait till I go through naturalization?

Thanks to all who can respond!

I know that I can still travel with the green card,I was just wondering!

GC is not a citizenship its just a legal status. You must use your Canadian passport. US passport is only given at NATURALIZATION.

Don't let the choices chose you, chose the choices that you want.

Hi Laynie,

Unfortunately, you cannot get US passport now, as you are not yet a US Citizen yet. For travel to Canada, you can use your Canadian passport and your US green card to get to and from the US/Canada. When you enter Canada, show your Canadian passport (to show Citizenship) and your US green card (to show residency) to Canadian officials. When you come back to the USA, show your US green card (to show residency) and Canadian passport (if travelling by air, not needed if travelling by land) to US officials. I've done this many times before when I've travelled to and from the USA and Canada (by land, though it also works if you're travelling by air too), and I didn't encounter any problems at all on either side of the borders.

You can file for US Citizenship with the N-400 form (Application for Naturalization) once you've met the 3/3/3/ rule, as you gained your residency through marriage. You have to have: 3 years of marriage to the same US Citizen spouse, 3 years of US permanent residency, and 3 years of physical presence residency in the USA. Otherwise, you can file in 5 years like in other non-marriage cases. Based on marriage, you can start filing for Citizenship 3 years minus 90 days and anytime after that.

Hope this helps. Congratulations on getting your green card recently and congratulations on your up-coming grandchild too. Good luck on the rest of your immigration journey.

Ant (Looking forward to US Citizenship soon, so that I can have a US passport too....)

Passports are available to US citizens only. Permanent residents travel with their current citizenship passport and the green card.
