What would you consider a small city?

I don't know how to define it. I'm thinking off the top of my head here, but a "small city" must have a downtown area. It should have some form of public transit. It should be moderately densely populated.

For example, I'd consider New Brunswick NJ a "small city" - population density: 9543 people per square mile (city-data.com). Hoboken, by contrast (pretty much an extension of NYC on the Jersey side), pop. density is 31222 people per square mile.

Sarasota isn't very dense at all - 3580 ppl per sq. mile.

Ok...well with AJ's definition...I wouldn't want to live in a small city for some reasons. I guess I want to live in a town. Where I live is about 1300 ppl/sq mile. Where we want to move is about 1000ppl/sq mile, so it's smaller.

FL tends to have smaller sized cities overall.

Density - 8/sq mi

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

On a purely objective level, there probably are too many people in the US as there are on the planet as a whole, well, if one wants everyone to have a shot at a decent standard of living anyway, and probably for the sustainability of the planet. However, stopping immigration isn't going to solve that problem. It might paper over the cracks for a while but solving it, not a chance.

All this effort going into the 'hatred' against when it could be going into postive efforts for...oh well.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Gotcha.

Oh yeah, a "small city" should have lots of early 1900's brownstones! :)

The city I live in now is considered a "small city" and it wasn't incorporated until 1960. No brownstones here, and 2903/sq mi.

way too busy for me. i opt for platy's idea.

Does it at least have a downtown?

Not a conventional one. We have a smattering of skyscrapers on large lots, and an aging town-esque main street like thing.

Sarasota does though :P
