Why can I not get ssn number with passport and I-94? My wife has K-! visa and we are already married but the officer sais that she needs to adjust status and have EAD document bdfore she cn get number? Is this correct? we need social number to add her to my insurance at work and we are not planning to file for adjustment of sattus at this time?

thanks,

When does her I-94 expire?

You may have waited too long. If it expires within 14 days or has already expired, you have to wait for EAD or permanent resident card.

This post addresses not filing AOS right away:

Unless the K-1 is about to expire in 2 weeks or already expired.

You can get one, There's a link on the the SSA website:

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cf...php?p_faqid=576

A lot of VJers got their SSN before applying for AOS/EAD.

No the officer is wrong. You can apply for SSN after 2-3 weeks of arrival and use it temporarily until you get married, thus amending the SSN to your married name. At least that's what I've read over a dozen times on this forum.

Many report dealing with MORONS at SSA.

K-1 can get SSN any time up to 76 days after entry to the USA after that and will have to wait for EAD or Green-card to get SSN.

Many just go to a different office, and apply for SSN using maiden name to avoid confusion. Then later change name on the card after getting EAD or Green-card.

NOTE: SSN is not required to add a person to your medical, I added my wife to my policy before she had SSN.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.
