There are of course plenty of Americans who struggle with basic English. Perhaps they haven't assimilated properly and should be sent to Cuba. Or jail.

My husband is Argentine, knows 8 languages - also speaks, reads, and writes fluent English. You know what gets him - the African Americans who he works with speak very poor English and write even worse. He says listening to them and to many Americans in general, is like listening to someone speak with a potato in their mouth.

I'm not coming down on the AAs in this country, but I think that Americans have a lot of explaining to do when they're trying to convince everyone that it should be English-Only, when most of our own people (American born, raised and educated!) can't even speak English. It makes me want to say, "Be thou not a sinner to cast the first stone."

Pretty much.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

i dont thinks she was referring to the accent regarding 'broken english'. but i agree with you, an accent doesnt make a person illiterate, or that they can't speak a language 'properly'

and nothing against panamania, she is a dear friend of mine  ; but the whole assault on people's right to speak whatever the flying fukc they want as long as they manage to live decent lives is just too upsetting. I cannot see the day when a pendejo will tell me I cannot speak Spanish, of French, or Italian. Land of the free my assss it would be.

I really do not care what language someone speaks.

My problem is when they get a job where they have to interact with the public, and they do not speak english.

I went to McDonalds one day and the person taking orders did not speak english very well. Also, at a store, the cashier did not speak english very well. This made things very difficult.

Like I said, I do not care what language people speak. BUT it pisses me off when I go to a store or McDonalds and the freaking person who is supposed to be helping me cannot speak the M FN language of this country!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU !

My best friend has been here for 23 years and still speaks very broken English.I just don't understand it.

I've had friends like that. Not bad people, just lazy. Don't see why someone would be here and refuse to speak the native/common language everyone else speaks, particularly in terms of business, education, etc. It's an insult to a society no matter what country it's done in.

I'd say pretty much the only two things that are wrong here are 1) lazy immigrants not wanting to learn a new language (pick your intended country to emigrate to) and 2) people expecting to be able to communicate fluently in any language while ordering at an establishment that underpays its employees.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Ok I just have to give my story here about a recent experience I had.

We went to Jackson Hole, WY for the fourth of July and my Brother's wedding. We were going through the McDonald's drive thru and when we got to the window the man didn't speak English he only spoke Spanish. Which was pretty weird for a resort town. At the second window it wasn't any better. This time it was a woman that only spoke Spanish and she looked at us weird and was offended we didn't speak any Spanish back to her. You should have seen the look she gave us. My Mother was so pissed off. It was the first time she cussed to anyone working food service and said, "You work at "Fn" McDonald's and you don't speak any English but you expect us to speak Spanish?" Then she gunned the engine and tore off in the parking lot in a fit of profanities about how that isn't right.

It's just like that at the McDonald's around here.

Interesting from someone who apparently rides the bus.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.
