At UMDNJ (a medical school near me) I've spoken to professors who say if you're a black graduate from Rutgers you need a 3.3 to be considered... if you're white, a 3.6... if you're South or East Asian, a 3.9.

Why? Because they need to keep the student body 'balanced' and 'representative'...

F**K balance! It should be the best person period. If all of the schools are filled with asians, then be it.

My favorite doctor is from Korea. He rocks.

I don't much care for Indian doctors. Maybe because I'm Indian they feel like they can say ####### to me that they would never say to a white patient. Like this one Indian lady who poked me in the tummy and raised her eyebrows with a look of disapproval and said, "and that's no good"

India does. Actual quotas, not AA "targets".

In some states, less than a quarter of available seats in colleges and positions in government jobs are available to the "general" category (upper caste Hindu males) - everything else is set aside as quotas.

And are the quotas based on race and gender? I wonder which countries base everything on abilities, and how everything works out for them.

But also, if there were no quotas, would that make people work harder because they knew that they couldn't rely on getting by due to their skin color or gender?

It's India, so caste, religion, gender and handicapped status. Not race.

As for your question about "if there were no quotas", no - that wouldn't happen in India. Speaking specifically to India, without any quotas at all, the systematic strangehold that upper caste Hindu males had on all the institutions of Indian society would not have been broken. Lower castes would continue to be excluded from any school or job worth a damn, just like they had been for thousands of years.

Now, an argument can be made that the quotas in India go too far. 75% in some places! That's mind boggling. But to argue that without quotas in India, lower caste youth would have a prayer, is simply silly.

Yes, but in the US today. I don't see that there would be an issue the same as India. It's not as bad as it was years ago.
