Well there was 13 dead in the midwest floods compared to 1500+ in Katrina.

I think this thread focuses more on those left behind after the disasters.

We also tend to evacuate when we are told to evacuate in the midwest.

F##k Iowa and the Midwest....it is such a boring place of famers and cornfed women...who wants to do a benefit for those backward white peckerheads.... :pop:

Exactly.

But I am also wondering where Sean Penn et al are.

P.S I am outraged that Nagin said that there was " gonna be a chocolate New Orleans..." #######? After the hurricane hit, it's amazing that New Orleans is still there, never mind all that chocolate BS.

After being pummeled by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, New Orleans is showing signs of recovery - ranking as the fastest-growing large city in the nation, according to a government report released Thursday.

The Census Bureau said New Orleans' population rose 13.8%, to 239,124, in the year ended July 1, 2007. That was a faster growth rate than any other city with a population of 100,000 or more.

I believe by "chocolate New Orleans" the guy was meaning that the city wouldn't lose its historical character (for which the city was known), which controversial as it may sound (and I really don't think it is) is connected to the ethnic mixture of the people who lived there.

People might be offended by the phraseology, but its not half as controversial as people want to make out.

I see what you are saying-but-there would be all hell let loose if our mayor here ( our town was/is hosting 1000's of evacuees and people rescused after the fact) stood up and stated "we are gonna be a vanilla [name of town]".

Why not pick another flavour? N

eopolitain or Blue Bell Split Decision flavour ( choc and vanilla in same tub). His phraseology stinks ( Nagin's-it's inciteful and racist). That's what I really think....and yes, I am outraged by it.

Its your right to be offended, and I'm in no way defending Nagin's record - but as far as that goes, given the context of that particularly speech I don't find it particularly offensive (bad phraseology doesn't automatically infer racist intent on the part of the speaker). But then people in this country are hypersensitive to anything that even remotely smells of "race" in this country, as that furore over that Mexican comic the other day suggests.

He even openly had a problem with all the Hispanics who were moving into NOLA to work the rebuilding effort.

Yeah. I think he is a complete prat, and it has nothing to do with his colour or ice cream preference. It has everything to do with him NOT encouraging people to return to NOLA to help rebuild his city in an integrated fashion for the benefit of the citizens.

I heard a large Dutch company was handling the re engineering of the levees and alot of the imported employees working the project were shocked at that devisive [sp] atmosphere in New Orleans.

I disagree, but that's ok.

What do you understand "chocolate city" to mean then? What if someone stood up in Scarborough ( UK)and said he are going to make this a Vindaloo City?
