According to this Salon article, poo is sweeping the nation! Well, at least a book about it is. What's Your Poo Telling You?, by Josh Richman and Anish Sheth, M.D., has sold over 225,000 copies.

Even Oprah's talking about poo!

So why poo, and why now? Well, when it comes to the success of "What's Your Poo Telling You?" there are two good reasons that two men in their 30s, who were potty-trained with the children's scatological classic "Everyone Poops," would grow up to write an adult version that speaks to their generation. No. 1, now that baby boomers are decidedly middle-aged, they're becoming ever more aware of physiological changes that make poop an important topic of conversation. No. 2, we're experiencing a baby boomer boomlet, with millions of new parents focusing, as new parents will, on their wee ones' output.

Moreover, this is the natural progression of a nation obsessed, and browbeaten, about eating healthy. So we've moved from mouth southward, from fretting over what goes in our mouth to what comes out the other end.

So, let's talk poo. Dr. Mehmet Oz can get us started:

"You want to hear what the stool, the poop, sounds like when it hits the water," Oz instructs. "If it sounds like a bombardier, you know, 'plop, plop, plop,' that's not right because it means you're constipated. It means the food is too hard by the time it comes out. It should hit the water like a diver from Acapulco hits the water." Oz makes a "swoosh" sound -- the sound of an Olympian excrement champion.

So tell us! We're all anonymous friends here. Do you check your poo? Do you do the doo-doo talk, or is that strictly behind closed (bathroom) doors? What does your poo say about you?

You just started my favorite topic - poop! Way better than all these political diatribe threads - cause not everyone cares about the environment and politics, but darn it - even takes a dump.

Good advice from the poopreport:

So I am forced to assume that Floaters are NOT the most desirable of all stools. Sinkers are by far more common. Don't spend your life chowing down on tofu burgers just because you think you are being cheated out of a Floater. Neither tofu burgers nor Floaters are worth the trouble. Sinkers are our destiny.

fat - fat in your poop makes it float. So if you have a greasy meal and digest and dispose of it properly it should float. Hence the idea that floating poop is better because it gets rid of excess fat.

That's what I heard, but what about good fats, like Flax or Olive oil?

Can we be frank here? I use (although not as regularly as I should) a Metamucil like fiber supplement and when I'm using it, poo-ing becomes the easiest of tasks, with little, if any 'residue'. If it didn't taste like I'm drinking sand, I'd be more inclined to drink it everyday as I should.

I would think that good fats still float too. But I'd assume you eat those in less quantity so it might not be enough to create a floater.

In regards to Fiber:

In the colon, insoluble fibers swell up with water expanding to about twenty times their original size. These water logged fibers create volume and weight in the stool as it

is formed.

Stools with good volume and weight stimulate muscle contractions in the colon. These muscle contractions move the stool through the colon. With regular stimulation, the tone of these muscles is maintained. Why is this important? Good intestinal tone means that the stools move along quickly through the colon. This is called “speedy stool transit time”. Speedy stool transit

time helps to prevent stools from becoming squeezed dry as a result of moving too slowly through the colon.

Additionally, the moisture retaining quality of the swollen insoluble fibers in the stool work to counter the water extracting action of the colon which also helps to prevent stool from becoming dried out.

This makes stools easier to pass.
