I (USC) had not worked for 7 years, had my parents co-sponsor and was able to get my husband approved easily.

I got a letter (ask for a copy of "earnings statement") from Social Security that showed that I had no income. The consulate did not question why I did not work.

i havent work since 2005, since i went back to the philippines to be with my husband. thats the reason for me not working for previous years.

my so worried bec they said once they invterview my husband they will ask what kind of work I do.

someone told me my husband might not get an approval thats why im so nervous for the coming invterview ... pretty soon.. huhuuhuuh

did they ask your income tax return for those years for you not working?

Hey Shaman,

It's ok if you haven't worked. Your petition won't be denied if you have a Co-sponsor that meets the requirements. Just make sure you have a co-Sponsor. For your co sponsor you need the I-864 and tax information (and asset information if needed). It would be a good idea to include a short letter explaining that you have not worked since 2005. You don't have to explain why in the letter. If you already sent yourI-864 and supporting documents without a letter explaining you did not work for the last 3 years, don't worry...NVC will request anything else it needs.

As far as the interview, the officer can ask anything he wishes. He may ask where or what type of work you do, but that is more part of the standard questions they ask. He may also ask that question knowing you have not worked to see if your husband's answer matches what the documentation states. They are trying to see if your marriage is a bonafide one.

Most importantly, don't worry that you have not worked. It will not result in a denial if you have a co-sponsor that meets the guidelines.

I'm in a similar situation except my wife just finished school about 2 years ago but didn't actually work full-time until last year. We were going to ask her brother-in-law to be a co-sponsor but he lives on the other side of the country does anyone know if this will be an issue? Once I return to the US I will be working but I am the beneficiary not the sponsor.
