Hi all.

I got married on May the 8th to my beautiful wife and today I sent off the adjustment of status package.

In the mean time, I am confused as hell as what to do about my education.

In England, we leave the equivalent of high school at the age of 16 and no matter how bad or good you do in your final tests, you have to leave school.

I have talked to several different people including the Ohio board of education, school districts, a place where you take your GED etc, and none have a dang clue on where I stand in terms of my education.

I am wondering if experienced people here (preferably people from England) that have now got a education in America can help point me in the right direction in terms of what I do. Whether if it is a phone number, or a website, anything would help me.

Thank you

i dont know the answer to that but i can tell u what happened when i returned after going to school in pakistan...

in pakistan i was in college at age 16 when i returned i had to go to my senior year in high school because u have to have so many credits of each topic be able to graduate here........for me it was a very difficult year because i had already done everything that was required for seniors .......it was very boring .......i dont know in ur situation but i would think the best thing to do is to ask for ur transcripts from where u went to school then at least who ever u talk to be it for ged or further education they have a better idea of where u stand in the normal criteria here in the usa for schooling......not sure this will help u but thought i would give it a try

Do you have a graduation certificate? If so, that's all you need. If not, you will probably need to take the GED here.

From:

http://www.britishcouncil.org/usa-educatio...-assessment.htm

There is no official method of equating British and American educational qualifications. The educational systems are entirely different and attempts to compare them must be done on a strictly provisional basis. However, general experience seems to indicate that 5 GCSE's or the Scottish Certificate of Education-Standard Grade passes are considered to weigh closest to the American high school diploma.

So if you have this 5GCSE's then you probably have the equivalent of a high school education here in the US. :)

I personally am of an age that we sat "O" levels....however my understanding is that for each subject you sit an exam for you receive a certificate?

I tend to agree with the above poster that 5 GCSE's tend to represent a sucessful high school equivalent....though this is a general opinion ....good luck.

What do you mean by 5 GCSE's? GCSE is the type of test you take as your final test, and do you mean 5 GCSE C grades? Or I don't know. I got a double C in Science and a C in religious studies, the rest is either D or under.

Dear Jomo Girl,

My husband is from Westmoreland, Jamaica and when he came to here to Texas he didn't have his graduate certificate so he called back home and his cousin went to his high school. The school sent a letter that was from the Admission office and it just states that its a school record. It has his name, mother's name, date of admission, date of birth. My husband said that he received a certificate, but lost it years ago. The cousin stated that the clerk stated that a lot of records have been lost/stored and they can't find the record for the certification. What should/could we do?

Depending on the job he is applying for, he may not need to prove a thing. Andre did not. Now that he is training for assistant manager, he will need it upon completion of that training, so we had his mom mail it to us. It is his original certificate.

If the job he applys for needs it, take in what he has and see what they say. Some jobs may require that he take GED certification before and/or during his employment with them.

I'm a firm believer in not worrying till you are given something to worry about. Most JA men I have know, have not had to prove anything at all. They just wrote that they graduated on the employment application and all was well. See what happens and then go from there.

Thanks for the information. My husband starts his new job with the city on Monday. He's got here in January and got his work permit in May and started working at Churchs Chicken. They were only giving him part-time hours, but he was a security guard in Jamaica and he is use to working longer hours. Now with the city he is guaranteed 40 hours a week and his work schedule is 7-3:30pm, which allows him to keep his job at Churchs.

The excitement on his face when they called and offered the job and he completed his physical made me feel good.

Dear Jomo Girl,

My husband went to his orientation today and just like you stated they didn't even ask him for the school record at all. I'm a worry wart - I've worked for the city for seven years and the department thats in charge of in-processing they have been snooty to immigrates that are employed with the city. Some of the employees from that department think that they are better because they were born here in the states.

Thanks again for responding and allowing me get mi worries out!
