Abandoning residence

My husband (UK citizen) and I moved to the UK in December 07 for me (the US citizen) to take a permanent job. He's in his two year conditional residence period, up for lifting of conditions in January 09. Since we're living out of the country, and have no plans to return to the US for next several years anyway, we're thinking he should just abandon residence officially and do DCF if we need to later.

We do plan to travel to the US in July for a three week holiday, and want to have his status clear by then so he doesn't have to answer questions about why he's been out of the US for over 6 mos. Does anyone know how we are supposed to go about this? I remember some advice about mailing the green card into the Consulate (here in the UK?) but can't find it now. We want to do everything by the book so we have no black marks if we do need to go for DCF eventually.

Thanks!!!

All due respect to VJTroll, however, I am with you - I think I would want to do something more official as well to ensure it doesn't come back and 'bite me' when either I visited or applied for the DCF. Why not contact the US Consulate in your area and ask them about how best to proceed. I suspect a registered letter sent to USCIS would be in order, however, the trick is where to send it. Good luck.
