I can't say I am in favor of merging threads - a sub-forum from Off Topic, fine.

I like the political topics - a lot of others apparently do to or they wouldn't post in them.

Well, in all honesty it is the same handful of people posting the stories. ;) Over and over. And over. And over....

I don't care which way we choose to go, sub forum or 3/4 threads dedicated to politics. I was just thinking of less work for Ewok.

And people comment on them. If they don't, the thread dies and goes away ;) .

Just like any other topic that gets mileage on these boards (illegal immigration, muslims, sex, strippers, spankings, whatever)

Death to the Troll! :bonk: Create a political subforum! :protest: (Will my protest need to be merged into the subforum?)

Just about any post in OT could fall into the 'political' category. I think if the author of the thread would be able to select a category label they feel is most appropriate when they post it and then for the viewers to have a filter option for only viewing the categories they are most interested in would be great. Capt. Ewok already has similar features (filters) so I don't think it'd be that difficult to implement. Also, the organizers could actively move threads if they morph from one category into another.

Whaddya say, Capt.? I think it would be worth a try. :)

Oh I agree with your "if they don't, the thread dies and goes away" quote. The main issue that people have is that it can become overwhelming to someone who isn't interested in politics. They go to OT and see the whole first page is of political threads - that doesn't happen with illegal immigration, muslims, sex, strippers, spankings etc . It's put many off taking part in OT so the suggestion of a political sub-forum or the separate threads is warranted and needed, imo.

I think one "Politics" forum is plenty. No need to break it down further, especially since the whole reason people are posting these political threads is to get the other side riled up. Nobody's interested in real, intelligent political discussion, so a separate "Obama" sub-forum would look pretty much like a separate "Hillary" sub-forum, just with different names and flames. Keep it all under one forum, that would be the easiest thing to do.

Valid point, mox.

Steve - I find it deeply ironic that you have started a thread where everyone complains there are too many political threads :P

Don't get lost by the irony of it...the idea is valid on it's own merits. :P

I agree it has merits but when you and Number 6 are complaining about the volume of political posts I really do need to have my eyes checked to make sure they are working properly :P

I don't mind political threads so long as they facilitate an actual discussion. 90% of these election articles seem to be presentational smear pieces with no meat to them and of the most dubious provenance.

It's ironic too, that the same thing was pinned on me over global warming and illegal immigration threads. I happen to post a lot of original threads on many topics, as does VJTroll, Gary, Dev, metta, Amber, Charles... There's also a lot of VJ'ers who rarely if ever start a thread, but are quite active on the boards. Perhaps some people are too timid to want to post an original thread because of the criticism or scrutiny that comes with it...to each their own.

In any case, some of the regular posters of threads have flooded OT with election threads, and when I say flooded, I'm talking about a dozen or more about the same candidate, by the same poster and it seems (I could be wrong), that they're intention isn't to get a discussion going but more like leaving those annoying brochures under the wiper blades of your car's windshield. I think it was Platy who I think rightly pointed it out as spamming the board. Rather than risk making it look as if any specific poster is being singled out, I've suggested a subforum, where they can spam/post new election threads to their hearts content without flooding the OT forum on a daily basis.

The idea has been raised before and ridiculed to death - with the stock "don't have to read" response.

I don't see the problem with a separate politics/religion forum - as I say many other forums have them and they work pretty well.

Nothing wrong with showing a little consideration for people who aren't (or aren't as) interested in politics or the election.
