What do i need to marry in Canada?

Mornin ya'll! Need some help with this one. My finace is in Alberta, Canada....I'm in Texas. We want to get married and live here in Texas. If we want to get married up in Alberta, then what's needed on my part? Is it just like the US where you'd need a special visa or can i just hop a plane, get married, come back home and start the paperwork process? Any of ya'll have a clue on this one? In all fairness, I would be coming back to Texas without a shadow of a doubt. I just want to go up there and get married.

I'll take anything ya'll can give me at this point!

No special visa needed.

Americans and Canadians have a special agreement.

You can just visit for a few days and get married...no visa needed.

They will ask you what you are doing in Canada, be honest, tell them you are visiting your fiance for a few days. You may have to show ties stating you are coming back to the U.S. like letters from your employers stating you are coming back, etc. etc.

That is, if you've never been married before. If you have, you'll need your divorce documents to be verified as being legal in Canada. The Canadian website has information on this.

If you want to limit the amount of time apart, I’d recommend not marrying in Canada. Pursue the K-1 (fiance visa) process and bring her to the states to marry.

Regardless of which route you take. Make sure you get plenty of pictures together and maintain records of communications.

Another option. If you really, really want to marry quickly, than try to get a religious wedding performed. Not a legal marriage. This way you are morally married, but can still bring her to states to get legally married on a K-1 visa.

I was unable to do this in my case, because there was no distinction between religious and legal marriage in Bolivia.

Religious marriage in Canada if performed by a clergy is legal, and most will not perform the wedding if the couple says they do not intend for it to be "legal". Its how the marriage laws are written in Canada.

You do not need a visa to be married in Canada, but as mentioned above, if you have a previous divorce in the US, you will have to take that with you in order to apply for the marriage license. I dunno about Alberta, but in Ontario the foreign divorce decree has to be approved by the provincial registrar before the license will be granted. This usually takes a few weeks.
