Once again, my little guy Thomas Jefferson has another medical ailment needing attention by the vet. Max and Thomas have had nothing but problems since November. I have spent over $2000 on the two of them since the end of November.

Well, I got off the plane today from visiting my hubby at 1:00, home by 2:00 and at the vet by 3:00pm. ThomasJ's eye looked like something crawled into it and died. So here we go again. After changing his food for his urinary tract infection last month ($100/month), more vet bills.

Poor little guy though. He looks like an unsuccessful boxer. Mommy looks like a poor bag lady.

Maybe it's time for pet insurance?!

Look at me, not even in the States yet, and I'm going private healthcare coverage already.

PS: Yes my little kitty is named after an American Prez, though I am Canadian. He comes from Alaska. Hubby and I couldn't agree on a single dignified name. We started with the most recent President/Prime Minister and worked our way back until we could agree on one. Naming TommyJ took a whole evening.

Sorry to hear about ur cats problems!! My parents are taking their 11 yr old Golden in for eye treatment soon and that bill alone will be around $3500.

I looked into pet insurance awhile back, not into great depth mind you--we have 2 Siberian cats and 1 dog---As usual some companies are better than others, and like human insurance, they do not cover conditions that already exist!! But liek my vet said, how would they know wink wink, lol Best of luck

Shoot, even the simple things are getting out of hand. We had Bruha spayed yesterday at a cost of $220. It wasn't more than 5 years ago that cost less than $100. Since we have 2 cats that we got at the same time that means we had to do it twice. Oh well, it's all done now. I hope they stay healthy because it's obvious that pet health care is just as expensive as human health care.

Pet Insurance is a major pain in the ####. I had it for both George and Bruno (our Saint Bernards) just for their first year to cover their spay/neuter ops, plus their first year vaccinations. But as flames metioned, they won't cover any existing conditions (and they'll find out, they are actually worse to deal with than human health insurance companies!). They also won't reimburse stuff if you go and pick up prescriptions even just a day early. Like when I went to get George's heartworm pills on a Saturday because the vet's office is closed Sunday (the day that her prescription actually was due). They wouldn't cover it because it was early :P

Both George and Bruno have cost us over $1000 in the past 3 weeks with meds, check-ups, vaccinations, and x-rays and blood work for Bruno. They thought he may have bone cancer, but luckily he's just got arthritis in his knee and back, and a touch of dysplasia.

Between the 2 of them, their monthly flea/heartworm, arthritis and pain meds are going to cost us over $200. And I'll be selling a kidney to pay for it I guess :(

I hope Thomas J is feeling better soon. Did he get pink eye? Poor thing.

I hear ya.

So far I had spent $1,500 for only one healthy cat with the following treatments: junior wellness profile (bloodwork, urine and fecal analysis), spaying, removal of sutures, vaccination shots, microchip implant and activation, ear cleaning, flea control (preventive), heartworm preventive, diagnostic tests (that's how I learned that my cat has minor respiratory infection) so there's antibiotics prescription and follow-up check-up which costs ($47) each time. Her litter box, litter, toys, scratching posts, bed, tag and collar, adoption ($100), skin care diet, treats, are excluded from that amount. Next week, I'll have her dental cleaning and grooming which the vet estimated at a whopping price of $ 648 (for dental only).

I had expected this and actually prepared $3,500 annual budget for my sweet cat. Before this, I checked a website (forgot which one) which helps prepare the pet owner for costs and work a budget for the year. My expenses fall within the high range, the lowest range, if I remember correctly, is $1,500. Owning a pet is a big responsibility too like caring for a human being, but they give you a different type of happiness out of this world. According to the three vets my pet see regularly, if your pet is generally healthy & young like mine, pet insurance is not that recommended. Senior cats are even more expensive.

UK pet insurance was great - I had no problems. For the sum of 10 GBP ($18) a month I was completely covered. Not so here! Crikey!

Incidentally, two of our cats have had urinary tract infections, cattatude, we use Purina Urinary Tract Health food. A huge bag costs $16 and lasts 6 cats a month. It was recommended by our vet here as one of the best for that kind of thing. You can find it in your local Wal-Mart too.

I hear ya Mags - Tesco insured my two kits for 13 GBP per month. And when the older was diagnosed with a mouth infection that rotted his teeth, and had to have 5 pulled, plus all the extra care etc, I was only liable for the first 100 GBP. I did look into it here and I just feel it is way to expensive, especially since the cover isnt that great.

My older cat was diagnosed with severe asthma a few months ago and it has cost us $1800 in total for the vet to tell us this and prescribe some Brethine and steroids.

Thanks to everyone who posted. For some reason, knowing that there are other people other there who've had the same problems makes me feel better. Not that I want anyone's animal to be in misery mind you. Cause I hate that ThomasJ is not doing well. But thank for your thoughts.

And I've been looking into pet insurance, I work for an insurance company and know how shitty we really are to our "beneficiaries". Not sure what I'm gonna do yet, since all of his problems are "pre-existing" at this point. Not sure what else could go wrong (UTI, lacks tear duct, eye infection, flea, ticks, asthma). I guess I should have anticipated this out of a little rez-kitty. But he makes me happy and is just the cutest thing.

Mags - thanks for the recommendation of Purina UT Health. I'll look into it. Chris and I were just discussing pet food options, since we'll be living in Hilo, HI which doesn't have much for pet food options. But they have a Wal-Mart so that is good if they carry this.

Thanks everyone. ThomasJ and I are going to watch some movies today and catch up.

I should not get into pet food, as it can be a controversial topic!! lol But many vets dont have a lot of "training" when it comes to pet food!! One of my prior vets told me, during his schooling, the teaching they got on nutrition was from a science diet rep!! So keep that in mind!! Majority of the high end foods-cat/dog are not found in walmart/target or even petsmart/petco! One has to go to s small specialty store or order online. And the high quality feed isn't that much more than the poorer quality stuff!! During this last pet food scare, the higher quality stuff was not affected it was the "mass" producing companies, buying their products from the cheapest supplier! Something to think about. I feed my cats Fellidae, and there are many others out there. Best of luck

Found this on the net, it is for dogs, but could work for cats as well:

Grading Dog Food

This method of grading dog food was developed by Sarah Irick. It is

not to be considered exact science but a starting point for people who

need help with how to read labels and choose a good food. You can read

about Sarah here. She has provided, with permission to Naper Doodles

to include on our website, the Grading Scheme, foods that have already

been graded in Alphabetical Order, and dog foods that have been graded

In Order of Score.

How to grade your dog's food

Start with a grade of 100 points

1) For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points

2) For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat,

meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points

3) If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points

4) For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source subtract 5

points

5) If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first

five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer's rice", "rice

flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points

6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2

meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points

7) If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points

8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points

9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points

10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract

2 points

11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is

allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points

12) If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points

13) If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic

to wheat), subtract 2 points

14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic

to beef), subtract 1 point

15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point

Extra Credit:

1) If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points

2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist,

add 5 points

3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points

4) If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points

5) If the food contains fruit, add 3 points

6) If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3

points

7) If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2

points

8) If the food contains barley, add 2 points

9) If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points

10) If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point

11) If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point

12) For every different specific animal protein source (other than the

first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein

source, but "chicken" and "fish" as 2 different sources), add 1 point

13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point

14) If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are

pesticide-free, add 1 point

I tried not to mention food and nutrition, funny now that someone did :D Thanks for the info.

I did shop around for vets and asked them so many questions and even dug up information about their education and training, experiences etc) if they could really provide the vet care my pet needs and our needs as pet owners. I hate to be so ####### about it but it actually paid off.

I order online for that special diet. So true (about what was mentioned).

Wow, thanks for that! I have had pets everyday of my life, and I feel like I still have so much to learn. I know nutrition can be controversial. But thanks for going there anyways. I'm just getting out the Nutro bag of cat food and doing some scoring. Might have to head back to the pet food store shortly. My vet recommends Royal Canin - of course cause it's so bloody expensive. I'll compare that one too.

Thanks for reminding me why I don't want pets.

Did I mention the litter box too? Or scooping poop outside? LOL.

If you ever consider getting a pet, send me a msg and I'll give you a horror story or two, and remind you of why you want to be pet free.

But as flames metioned, they won't cover any existing conditions (and they'll find out, they are actually worse to deal with than human health insurance companies!).

How do they even know it's the same dog that has "pre-exisiting conditions"?

Do they chip them to prevent insurance fraud?
