The words have huge meaning and significance even without total compliance. To try to 'force' people to adhere to the principals of UDHR goes against its very meaning. There is no 'power' required beyond the acceptance of the principals of human rights. The fact that you even recognise the idea of human rights is because of the UN and the agreement.

I don't object to the UN as a body, however, if it was a complete success then there would be no human rights contraventions anywhere in the world. The UN cannot change religious beliefs, nor centuries of traditions. It cannot force its ideals onto nations that have absolutely no interest in listening to them. The League of Nations disbanded before the second world war (I believe), as it could not prevent the war from breaking out. If it had been operational, I do not believe for one second that Hitler would have listened to it.

Religion is a major factor in people's human rights beliefs. Without religion, we wouldn't need to have this discussion in the first place. In Saudi particularly, the religious police have the right to administer all sorts of punishments.

how about we just let them keep killing/executing each other for what we think are stupid things and pretty soon there will be less of them to breed so they're less likely to have more of the extremists!

it's a jewish thing. the boys have the ceremony for the cutting and someone came along and thought it wasn't fair so now the girls have a naming ceremony where they get their hebrew name. I think that's right but someone correct me if I'm wrong
