That is so very wrong. No one should be able to tell us what to do, especially the UN. We are a sovereign country. I am not willing to give that up to anyone. The UN was wrong to begin with and is wrong now. Disband the UN.

I agree with you except for disbanding the UN. The UN is a forum - at times, a valuable one.

Ok, as long as it is just a forum for airing points of view than that is acceptable. But it should never have any power or even the illusion of power.

It's better to have a forum than to not have one at all. Do you disagree? I am not saying the UN has a perfect track record, just saying I'd rather have it around as a forum than not at all. Communication is good and important, even with enemies. Doesn't mean you have to do as they say.

If you don't believe in the UN then clearly you don't believe in human rights as an absolute. If you don't believe that then there is no such thing as terrorism and anything goes. Don't bother with your 'gassing towns' blah, blah, blah it's totally irrelevant in this context and the only argument is what is good for the US regardless of anything else. Personally I believe that's a huge step backward.

The UN wasn't meant to be a goverment but an arbiter of the human rights declaration, I guess you don't really care about UNISEF or an interenational criminal court either? Scary.

"One of the great achievements of the United Nations is the creation of a comprehensive body of human rights law to which all nations can subscribe. The UN has also developed effective mechanisms to protect human rights, benefiting people all over the world.

The UN advances human rights in many ways:"

Clearly you don't understand the argument if you think that's a straw man.

If you don't believe in the UN then clearly you don't believe in human rights as an absolute.

That is quite a leap. If I don't believe in the UN then I don't believe in human rights? How do you make that connection? The UN was a bad idea but that does not preclude my belief in human rights.

How exactly do 'human rights' exist without the UN Gary?

How exactly do they exist with the UN? The UN is useless. They can make all the proclamations they want but unless your advocating turning the worlds armies over to them then they can do nothing. Having the UN does not promote "human rights". If you disagree then look at the world. They have done nothing other than make speeches and pass resolutions that mean nothing.

The only reason there are any 'human rights' at all Gary is because of the UN. The fact that globally 'human rights' are not respected is because of two things. One, there are states who have not signed up to any part of the human rights resolution and two those who have signed up to it are not consistant in applying these standards to themselves. However, be absolutely clear, if you abolished the UN any notion of 'human rights' would be abolished with it unless you replaced it with something similar.

We have a UN now. How do you explain all the human rights violations in the world? The UN has done nothing to change it. In fact I would say things are just as bad now than before the UN was created. The only way the UN can create universal human rights is to have a one world government with the UN as the world boss. Is that what you are suggesting?
