Getting ready to make my move to US

Hi Everybody,

Am getting ready to make my move to US. Before I leave, I have to plan some of my ongoing liabilities which follows here.

1) Last year I made some investments that gets auto debited from my account every month. Since those investments are under locking period I cannot withdraw them at this point of time when I need it the most :-( I could have easily managed it, if I were to be in India even after marriage. But now I know that I will not be able go back to India untill I get AOS. And am also not sure by what time I will get a good job offer in US. Hence I have to arrange funds for it for next couple of months. So that I dont have to worry untill I get Job in US. My Fiance did offer me help however as of now I want to see how much I can handle myself.

2) I am also trying to get my accounts and liabilities either automated or online. So that if need be I can handle it through web. Dont want to bother my parents back home for it.

3) I own a car here in India which no one will be using at home after me. I want to sell it off too before I leave. Dont want to see it depreciating without any reason.

4) I will have to give at least 1 months notice to my employer before leaving. I have been reading posts where people were issued 221g hence keeping my liabilities in mind, I havnt resigned yet. I will do so as soon as I get visa in hand. Other reason for not resigning is; last time when I took break of a months time from work I got so irritable and bored that my Fiance felt I remain happy when I am occupied. I agree to him. :-)

5) I also want to keep some funds for my parents, though my Dad gets a decent pension and my brother earns a handsome paystub too. Still I want to do this because being always independent I have felt of doing something extra for my parents for what they have done for me till now.

6) After all this I will be left with very little to spend for my shopping :-(

Now My interview is scheduled after 10 days on 20th Feb. However I am planning to be with my Fiance in US by first week of March. So this leaves some 15 days which is really freaking me out. Wanted to see how other people manage. May be I can get some smart tips.

Thanks,

Manya

Sounds like you have everything covered so don't worry! Just take care of the financial necessities first and don's sweat the non-urgent things. For instance you can start helping your parents once you get a job in USA and accept accept help from your fiance in case getting a job in USA takes longer.

You seem to have pretty much everything under control, I agree with you the 1st thing you might want to do is to sell the car, as it will depreciate over time.

You can also set up an NRE account and can even add your dad as Mandate, where he can withdraw funds from the account in case of an emergency. The other thing, set up an automated online banking for your parents so even without being a mandate you can make a online transfer to his account and that only takes a couple of days, you can even set it up for a fixed amount every month.

for you financial transaction request the bank to have online access to them.

One piece of advice, there's a lot of adjustment when you move the states, specially with a girl that's so independent the longer you stay at home the more restless you become, just keep in mind it's a phase, and your hubby support will help you get through it. Not sure how closed you are with your folks, but there's that homesickness feeling, coming with k1 not able to work for awhile, If you have internet access at home try to get them a webcam so you can always see them when you get here.

Set up a high speed internet access at home so you can get a VOIP phone, that way you guys can talk to each other without worring about buying phone cards and so on.

When things get kinda tough, remember those little things that brought you guys together, what got you started in the journey in the 1st place, at time with stress, looking for work, and every day stuff, those things seem to have goten lost in the shuffle. Wishing you all the best at the interview and a safe Journey here to the states.

Gone but not Forgotten!

hi,

I think, about leaving money for your parents... u can tell ur brother to sell the car.. because u wont be able to sell it in time of 15 days.... so that money can be for your parents... you can take money from your brother if thats fine for him... and they money of ur investments which yoiu have had made... he can take them so u can save on fine charged by finance company and also there is a lock in period... i think you should talk out with your brother... so he can encash all ur investments ...and he can give you the money now.... and you can have money for shopping and some money in USA.... you can also do one thing is ...open an account with private bank ... so u can access the funds online...and all transactions can be tracked by you.

Hi Jigi,

My brother is on a project in Kuwait. I did discuss some options with him but since we know that he wont be able to come back before a years time, I am thinking to getting a good deal myself before I leave. I have a well maintained car and some of my friends are really interested in it. I can sell it in a weeks time but I want to sell it after getting the visa.

Secondly, finance company cant charge me anything on my investments because they are my Unit plans (Mutual Funds). I can either fund my account for the monthly deduction for it or I can stop the auto debit facility for couple of months. I wont get charged for it. Only thing is that I wont get any units for that period of time.

For the bank accounts, am in the process of getting internet access.

Taking money from brother will be last option. I think I will be able to manage without taking it from him if everything goes well as planned.

Now am only concerned about serving notice period to my employer. I hold a responsible position in my organisation and am just hoping that they release me soon. I havnt given them a hint yet because I myself do not know how much time this visa process would take.

How did u manage everything?

Manya

hi,

I know how tough it is.... about funds i didnt have that much of worry to wind up all.. and about work... i had a business.. i wrapped it up in a weeks time... so it was okay.... and u can fix a deal with ur friend.. and tell about ur situation of delivery of the car... which depends on time u get visa.... u can take token from them .....

and about the mutual funds its better to wind them up.... because while closing the account they will need ur signatures... and u can keeep the forms ready...

another thing... you also prepare the form with ur signature... for transfer of vehicle deed from the RTO office.

Make ur mom or dad joint account holder or keeep a bunch of cheques for them signed so that they can operate them in your absence.

I hope this helps

Jigi
