Hey everyone,

On everyone's timelines people keep referring to being touched! I am just wondering, is this something that comes up when you check you status online, and what exactly does it mean?

Also, a different note much further down the line, I have previously had a J-1 summer work visa so I had a social security number. I no I keep the same one eventually, but does anyone know if it will be sorted any quicker? And in fact, does anyone know if this might speed up or delay my case at all?

James

Hi James,

Once you send off your petition and it's received and everything, you can set up an account at USCIS to keep an eye on your petition's progress. Being 'touched' doesn't necessary mean anything big is happening. Apparently the Centers log that the petition was touched for the smallest things, like just transferring it from one desk to another.

I don't know about your other question. I don't think it would hurt or complicate things at all that you've worked here before.

Summer 2001 - met my Scottish boy

December 18th, 2007 - proposal in Madrid's Botanical Gardens with a duck standing behind him going 'food?'

January 18th, 2008 - I-129F sent to VSC

January 31st, 2008 - received NOA1, issued Jan. 24 :)

February 24th, 2008 - NOA2; omgwtfbbqlolz

February 29th, 2008 - NVC letter sent

"Touching" is meaningless and no big deal. Some petitions get 'touched" and others never do. It only indicates someone had your petition in their hands and made note of it on the database. What truly counts are NOAs (yeah!) and RFEs (Boo!) :)

Just to expand on what Kazan' Tiger is saying, the reason touches are meaningless is because a) you may never get one, and b) you will only know if a touch meant something in hindsight, if at all. For example, if a touch means that it's on someone's desk and they are about to approve it, you will only know that after you receive the approval, at which point the knowledge is useless. A lot of people get worked up about touches, either because they get one or because they didn't. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, and that's how I'd think of touches.
