I know taxes vary per state but I figure the overall is exactly the same. I am in WA so we have only Federal (no state).

Do you file taxes exactly like you would for anyone else? So instead of the USC filing single, now they will be filing Married Filing Jointly (or however someone wants to do it). You just enter the PR's w-2 and SS# and walla! ?? (obviously with the items in between). But basically the overall jist is as if a person who has never worked before (in this case, the US) and is now working (only since 2007) and filing taxes for the first time? Nothing special or different for Permanant Residents?

As a note: My husband only worked AFTER he received his greencard if that makes any difference.

Also wanted to know if anyone knows if you have to report foreign pay from before we got married in the US? He only worked in the UK for about 3 months (2007) and already sent off the form to the UK saying he is no longer earning money in the UK (their tax form I guess). I assume we only have to report to the IRS what he has earned ONLY in the US correct??

The USC & LPR can file the same way.

If you only have to file the Federal, this may help you.

No you have to report what he earned in the UK, but you can also claim the income tax he paid on that money in the UK against US income tax.

There is reciprocal agreement between the US and the UK so under normal circumstances you only pay tax in one country on earnings.

I have a pension from my UK employer which has tax deducted in the UK, so I don't pay federal income tax in the US on that income, but I have to declare that on my US tax return.
