Philippine Satellite Internet Providers?

I was thinking about trying to find a satellite internet service for my in-laws. Unless it is extremely expensive we could get them a computer and web-cam and save enough on international calling and texts to pay for the service.

There are no land lines near my in-laws home and the wireless internet some cell companies provide doesn't reach there either.

Plus if we could get them internet service, they could start a little internet cafe as well to make some extra!

While I'm not certain about all the options in the Philippines, I saw the following thread here which may be of some help (it contains an alleged satellite internet provider). Some advice from my personal knowledge: stick with 2-way satellite internet. This allows you to transmit and receive over a satellite connection. 1-way satellite internet offers download bandwidth via satellite (potentially fast) but all of your upstream traffic must travel through a dial-up connection (slow, obviously). This means that whenever you send data from your computer to someone else (or upload a photo, etc to a website) for example, it will be quite slow on a 1-way satellite connection. Also, you will probably want to stick with satellite providers that are specific to the Philippines or that region at least. There are some satellite providers that cover large areas of the globe, such as Iridium (which actually covers the ENTIRE globe) but they are quite expensive and very slow (about 9 kbps I believe). Such services are likely intended for those who need emergency internet access out in very remote areas such as Antarctica.

Please define expensive. I have found that my Wife thinks her DSL is expensive at 300Php monthly (heck we pay the whole phone bill which includes the DSL and it is only 1,000PHP/$20 per month)...

In general satellite is a bad option for voice because of the extra travel times for the packets.

The two above require you ask for a quote, which always means they are insanely expensive. The one I mentioned here apparently starts at 10,000PHP/month and they require a total deposit of 20,000 PHP and installation costs of 25,000 PHP. Satellite is always going to be much more expensive than more traditional forms of broadband communication no matter where you are.

to get reasonable bandwidth (especially if you are expecting to share the connection) you will probably spend between $500 and $1000/ month. That is the recurring fee after paying initial deposits, setup charges, and equipment costs.

I don't know what they are called, but they have home phones that can be carried around the house and have an antenna.

Maybe these phones have an input to be used for dial up? Would give a good connection for chat and voice, but likely not very good video.
