Embassy Review : We had our K-1 visa interview on 7/21/11 at 2:00 pm. We waited in the line outside until I noticed that US citizens don't have to wait in line. We jumped ahead and went inside. The security guards directed us to the waiting area.

After about 30 minutes they called Carolina to the window. I went up with her and we spoke with the Consulate worker. She said that she just needed some papers from Carolina, and she asked me to have a seat. She said that I could be present for the acutal interview.

Carolina spoke with the woman, and after a few minutes she began to wave me over. Carolina did not know that she was supposed to pay in advance, we thought that we were going to pay that day. Luckily the woman still allowed us to have the interview, but we weren't off to a good start. Carolina had also forgotten to fill out a paper so she did that quickly.

After that we had to sit and wait for the interview. It was another 15-25 minutes before they called us back up. We were interviewed by a woman named Rachel. She remembered Carolina from a previous visa interview (tourist visa). Carolina had been denied the tourist visa. Rachel asked Carolina why she did not mention me during her tourist visa interview. She felt that Carolina had lied and misrepresented herself. I brought up the fact that Carolina had been to the US twice while we were dating, and she never overstayed her visa.

Rachel asked me where my parents were, which I thought was strange. I told her that they were in downtown Santiago. They had came to Chile for our wedding in Chile (ceremony only). Obviously she already knew this somehow. We showed her a picture of Carolina and I at the wedding. We also both had our wedding bands on. I showed her the wedding contract for here in the US.

She asked us a few other questions. Carolina was very nervous. A couple times when Rachel asked me a question, Carolina tried to answer. She got a little annoyed and told Carolina that she was asking me, not her. She was very nice while talking with me, but pretty rude with Carolina.

We had one other issue. When Carolina was here for the first time, she had worked illegally in a restaurant. She was on a tourist visa and she was not to be working. She only worked for about 2-3 weeks. We were honest about this and we listed in on her G325. When Rachel asked us if there was anything else we needed to tell her, we mentioned this.

She looked pretty concerned and she left the window to speak with some coworkers. She came back and said that she would have to consult with the Legal Department and get back to us. She could not give us an answer on the visa, and the interview was over. She made it clear that Carolina had to pay the fee as soon as possible. We thought that they were going to deny the visa, but that they wanted to get the money first. We also had a bad feeling because Rachel asked Carolina if she needed her passport. We knew they would keep the passport if we were getting the visa.

Carolina paid the fee and we waited for 20 days. I had emailed them a few times, but they just told me that it was still processing and they would be in touch when a decision was made. Finally, on 8/10/11, Carolina received a package from the embassy with the visa inside. It was one of the greatest days of our lives.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
