Consulate Review: Peru
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 17, 2011
Embassy Review : The first part is the Medical Interview. We went to the Clinica Anglo-Americana, and the two things I would recommend is bring a book and food. We were there for about 7 hours and it is not a plesant waiting room. However, the staff was very amiable with my fiancee and allowed me to accompany her.

For the interview at the Lima Consulate, first be careful about overpaying on taxis. Be suspect of anything above 18 soles during rush hour as a couple of drivers asked for 25 or even 30. Secondly it is a giant fortress and the earlier the better. We got there about an hour before our appointment so there were no lines. They will take all electronics so it is better to leave them. We were directed to then enter a waiting room once we showed the appointment time for my fiancee. The waiting room reminds me of a lobby of a modern hotel. We waited about 15 minutes, and then were called up. She asked for the forms, my affadafit, and asked some questions, "Where did you all meet? When did you first start your relationship? What date did he propose? Where did he prospose? Has he met your family? How many times has he come to Peru?" She then briefly went through our file, clearly not too carefully because as she was filing it, I had to ask to sign something. She then flipped through our photos. We had about 40 of them and I do think that helped. She then had me pay. I figured it had to be cash (As I've never used credit with the US government), so brought $20 bills so not to raise concerns of counterfeiting $100 bills. She was def. annoyed with this, and then to my horror, about $200 of the 700 wore slightly torn or wrinkled so she wouldn't take them. When I asked about an ATM on the grounds she said we would have to exit, go across the street to a bank and reenter and begin the process. Horrified, I then asked if they took credit, so we paid in the much easier version of Discover Card.
We then waited five more minutes and were called in a little closet for our second interview. We both went in there, he flipped through the photos, asked if I spoke Spanish. I said yes. He then said, I'll ask her in Spanish if that's okay with you. He then repeated much of the same questions along with, If she had ever entered the United States before and if this would be her first marriage. After that he then told me in English, "Do you want to tell her in Spanish the good news or shall I?" So I told her that we had been approved, and she said, but I thought there would be more questions, and when the consuler told her she screamed and said thank you thank you. She held up her right hand and swore, signed something and we left to file a delivery with DHL. One note of caution, DHL could not deliever to her town, Tarapoto. So be sure to call if they'll deliever or only it can be picked up in Lima before you plan your flights.
Rating : Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
