Consulate Review: Bogota, Colombia
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : March 7, 2011
Embassy Review : We arrived at the embassy at 5:30. We were first in line. I had hoped to be first so that we didn’t spend the whole day sitting. It was cold and raining. Make sure you are prepared. Go directly to line #3.
We were let into the embassy about 6:45. We waited in a line to receive the folders to put our documents in. We went back to submit our folders about 7:30. Now the waiting begins.
We saw many people that were behind us in line getting called up before us, so we began to wonder what was going on. Being first made no difference at all. Everything was very random.
Finally Jenny was called at 10:30. I purposely went with her to the window although I knew I would be told to sit down. I wanted to make sure they saw I was there with her.
Still not sure why, but they claimed something was wrong with her passport picture. We had submitted many of the exact same pictures throughout the whole process. Jenny left the embassy to one of the many passport picture businesses outside of the embassy and had a new passport picture taken. She was back and submitted the new picture in 30 minutes.
At 11:30 Jenny was called to go give her fingerprints. At 12:30 we were finally called for the interview. Jenny was first. It was conducted in Spanish, but she was asked a couple questions in English. She was mostly asked about the dates of my visits to Colombia, where did we stay. She was asked if she met my children. I was asked pretty much the same questions. No additional info was asked for from Jenny or me.
We did have an issue with her son’s birth certificate. I was not aware of this. Apparently there was a simple typo on his original birth certificate. We only submitted the corrected birth certificate. They wanted to see the original. We did not have it with us and Jenny was not sure where it was. They gave us a pink card telling us to come back that day or the following day before 2:30. We went back to the apartment we rented and luckily Jenny had the original birth certificate. We hurried back to the embassy and submitted the original. They lady told us all was good and we went to pay the Domesa courier service. We were finished at 2:30.
I saw many women that were alone that were being denied visas. One lady had been married a couple years. We had several officers tell us that it was good that I was there. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for both of you to be at the interview. It was made very clear to us Jenny probably would have been denied if I wasn’t there.
I also received several comments about how organized my file was. This was very important to them. The lady told me they get some real messes from applicants and it’s difficult for them to look through the files.
Words of advice:
BE ORGANIZED AND DETAILED
BOTH OF YOU GO TO THE INTERVIEW

If you have any questions please contact me. I can offer info on how I organized my files, the apartment I rented or anything else I may be able to help you with
Rating : Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
