Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada

Embassy Review : Ok so I have ready probably every single consulate review on this website in order to prepare for today\'s Montreal immigration interview. It seemed like people had nothing but good things to say about this particular consulate so I was excited to get there and get through the process. No one was more surprised than me when it all turned into a HORRIBLE experience.

My husband and I got up at 5:30 a.m. and hopped on the metro in order to get to the consulate by 6:40. There were only 3 other people there - a single woman and then another couple. We patiently waited until 7:30 for security to open the doors. we had our interview letter and passports ready. We went through security making sure to think ahead and get everything out of our pockets and have it ready to put through the machine. We didn\'t bring wallets or purses of any kind. Just our documents and the clothes on our backs.

After getting through security we were told to head downstairs and wait by the elevator. So we did just that, sitting with the other 3 people right next to the elevator doors. As each person came downstairs they found a seat in a calm and orderly fashion, respecting who got there first. Then at about 8:10 a security guard came in and said he\'d be taking the first batch of people up in the elevator. This is when things got seriously messed up. We all stood up and got ready to get on the elevator (and of course some rude people elbowed there way to the front confirming that people still ARE raised in barns without any manners) and when the doors opened and we started to get on, the security guard decided to just pick and choose who he felt like letting on. My husband and I were told to sit back down along with the couple ahead of us while the person at the very front of the line was let on. He then just arbitrarily pointed at people and said \"you, you, you and you can go. You and you must sit down....\" We were all pretty stunned when the doors closed and about 12 other couples had headed up to get the first numbers - we were also pretty angry since most of the people he chose had gotten to the embassy WAY after us. Like at 7:30 and LATER. So all those people that got their butts out of bed at the crack of dawn, forgoing a nice meal, some coffee, a little extra sleep all ended up being punished. Ridiculous. So as we all sat around we figured there was some sort of plan or order to what this guy had done - perhaps these people were applying for different Visas? or had a different interview time? Nope. After us all talking amongst ourselves and hashing it out we realized that this security guard just decided to be a jerk. When we finally got upstairs and got our number (C-13) we went through the usual process: get called up and handed over first set of papers / got fingerprints taken; get called up and handed over second set of paperwork. Then began the painful waiting and watching while EVERY single person that was down at the elevator with us save for 2 people went ahead of us and got their interview. They called C1 to C-12 (not in that order) and then when we finally started to get excited that we were up soon they went to C17 then C14 then C11 then C19 and then C20. It was RIDICULOUS. We had all of our paperwork already filled out (a copy of the DS-230 as well) and when we finally got called up 6.5 HOURS after getting there they went through our papers with us saying that everything looked good good and then after a few more questions the lady said she was going to deny us because although my husband made well over the poverty line on last year\'s taxes he was currently unemployed and we\'d need a joint sponsor. Sure thing. Well WE HAD ALREADY GIVEN THE PREVIOUS INTERVIEWER OUR JOINT SPONSOR PAPERS!!! ARGH!!! So she was like \"oh, well that changes everything.\" and then had to go back into the computer and undo all the typing she\'d done about denying our visa.

This was about the worst experience I\'ve ever had. I felt like screaming, crying, banging my fists but of course you don\'t even have the freedom to express yourself in a situation like that since the power these people weild over your life is so great. When she finally handed us our \"welcome to America\" paper I was so hungry (yeah, you can\'t bring any food with you - be prepared to wait 6.5 hours with no food people), tired, angry and drained that I just took it and walked out. It wasn\'t until I was on the metro heading back to our hotel that I burst into tears.

I just wanted to warn people and let them know that not all experiences at the Montreal consulate are good ones. Even if you have ALL your paperwork completely organized, follow all the rules, and get there early. My biggest advice would be DON\'T BOTHER GETTING THERE EARLY! They just decide to put you in any order they feel like it based on who knows what.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
