Consulate Review: Chennai, India
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : March 9, 2011
Embassy Review : My interview was scheduled at 8.00 AM. I reached 15 min in advance and it was a good idea, since they do not allow people inside before that.

Step 1 : Security Check
There is a security check outside the consulate, where the lady will ask for the interview letter. Once inside the consulate, there is a through security check. Tips: Do not take any bags, mobiles, electronic devices etc. Ladies - Even a handbag is not allowed.

Step 2 : Interview by the indian personnel
There is a separate area for the Immigration visa. There will be an executive who will collect your interview letter. After this the waiting starts. I had to wait for 1 hour before my name was called. A lady at the counter asked the following questions

1. Who is sponsoring for me?
2. What does he do there?
3. From how long is he in US?
4. What do I do here.

After this, she returned the originals and I went back to the waiting area.

Step 3 : Biometrics.

After about 10 mins, my name was again called for biometrics. Finger print of all the 10 fingers are taken.

Step 4 : Interview

The interviewing lady was very pleasant and polite. She asked the following questions

1. Tell me something about your husband
2. When did you get married
3. How did you two meet? (It was an arranged marriage)
4. How did the proposal come through
5. Where did you go for your honeymoon.
6. Has he come to India after the wedding
7. She wanted to see pictures of the wedding. (I had taken a small size assorted album with pics of wedding, reception etc. It may be a good idea to do this since its easy to pass the album through the counter)

That was it... She said "Congrats.. Your visa is approved.."
I was not asked for any emails, chat transcripts, call logs etc - though i had printouts of all these.

The whole process took about 3 hours from the time i reached the consulate. The actual interview took only 5 mins.

Overall a good experience.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
