Border control going into the USA has always been friendly and helpful. on the morning of my POE, I was instructed to enter the building where I was asked one or two questions, my fingerprints were taken as well as my entry package. The officer was very friendly and welcoming.
Took about 20 minutes all in all. No hassles and as I said, made me feel very welcome into the USA. |

Embassy Review : |
We got there at 6:45 and were 3rd in line. The doors opened at 7:30 sharp and the guards let one petitioner at a time (along with with their daughter/friend/fiance/spouse).
A woman was sitting on the side stoop beside the stairs and asked to see my consulate interview letter and asked for my DHL reference number.
First problem! I had never registered with DHL! For some reason we skipped that whole process.
She gave us the name of the website where we had to register, we left and went around the corner on Réne Lévesque to little cafe and logged on.
I found their phone number and at 8am finally got an operator. She walked me through registeration and I got my reference number!
We went back around the corner to the Consulate and were first in line!
We got in and the up to security. We had to take put all our metal and electronic items, coins, and my wife's purse into a bin.
So if you are going, make sure you pack light as your purse will be searched.
We were given a ticket wich we would need later to get our phones/purse/stuff and wend through a door down the stairs to the awaiting elevator.
There were no line-ups, we just called the elevator, got in alone and
pressed the 19th floor (this elevator only goes to floors 19 and 22).
Once up we turned to the left and went to Window 14a where the woman gave me another ticket - this was my interview number - C8.
That means that we went from 3rd to 8th because of the DHL mixup. Oh well.
We chose a seat (does nt matter where you sit!) and waited for our number to be called.
less than 5 minutes later I got called! My wife was so nervous, which kind of helped me keep calm - it forced me to.
I went up handed him my ticket and had my fingerprints scanned electronically - left hand fingers, right hand fingers, then both thumbs.
and Handed my borth certificate, wedding certificate and some tax info.
After maybe 10 minutes, he told me I was done and could sit dowen and wait for my number to be called again.
We were sitting in the second row, and the 2 sets of people that were in ront of us outside the consulate were sitting there.
One by one they both were called into the 2nd "interview" - these were at windows
8, 9 and 10 near the woman's washroom.
The first person came back from the second (and last) interview minutes later smiling.
The second person came back from her last interview minutes after that smiling.
We waited for maybe 5 more minutes and were called to window 9. My wife came with me and she was asked to have a seat near the window when we got there.
The woman at the window had my file in front of her and asked me to read an oath effectively saying that the information I had and will give would be correct and truthful to the best of my knowledge.
I read it and handed the sheet back to her.
She asked me how I met my wife, how long we had been married, and how we had kept in touch.
I told her that we met on Facebook, we had talked on Skype and I flew down for visits. Then we got married in Raleigh. My wife then "moved" up here to Montreal with me and stayed on a series of 6 month visitor visa's for the last 2 years.
Now we planned to move down to North Carolina.
She clicked through a few screens on the computer, put an elastic band around my file, and she said that she is approving my visa and then handed me a second paper welcoming me to the United States.
I thanked her and turned to my wife who had taken a chair near the window.
My wife was shaking and tearing when I hugged her, we must have walked back to the waiting-room with huge smiles because every face in the place smiled back at us.
We called the elevator, I kissed my wife all the way from floor 19 down to the ground floor. We picked up our things at the security desk and left.
There was no elevator drama as we had read about in years past, there was no "best" place to sit in the waiting rooms, and we didn't really need to get there so early on the day we went. We went in about 8:15 an were out less than an hour later.
All in all it was a much easier and painless process than we could have imagined.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
