Embassy Review : Important for those American Citizens awaiting a Security Clearance - Engaged to a Foriegn National

Yesterday, July 27th 2010

We arrived at the Consulate at 610 am. There was a line with about 5 women in front of us. Everyone was very nervous, including myself, Me and my fiancee awaited the assistance of the workers (consulate ambassadors) whom wore vests that said "Immigration Services, May I help you?" on the back. The workers came outside and handed us a small ticket that would accompany our cell-phones which we left at the entry point. When we left we needed to provide them with the first part of the ticket for verification to receive our cell-phones when we left the consulate. At about 715 exactly we entered the building and walked upstairs to the second floor where we entered a room that was to be our waiting place for checking of our documents (2x) and then finally the actual interview which was in a small room that was also inside the same sitting area where we were. The consulate ambassador was about 20-23 years old, she sat at the back of the roon calling out individuals in no particular order to check their documents and be sure that they were all in the order that was listed on the consulate checklist. As soon as she was done we sat back down and waited our turn to enter what I'd like to call the fish tank... in the front of the room. The consulate assistant sat behind a plexiglass window that had a small speaker attached for them to speak to us, and hear them in. My fiancee verfied with the assitant that all of our documents were in order at which time she told us that we could go and sit back outside and when our number was called (senha). We could go in for our interview. At this time it was around 815. We sat down and that is when the nerves started being tried. It was cold in the room. Cold enough for a jacket. We were the fourth people to have our doucments checked, and yet we saw the entire room full of people start to be called, 246, our number was 244. we were certain that we would be picked next. But for some reason the choice of interviews were random. As we sat there watching O GLOBO tv on the 46 in flat screen, my fiancee started biting her nails.. ( CALMA ) I told her. LOL Then we noticed that we were the second to last people left in the room. The first girl to enter the interview room came out in 5 minutes. She had the biggest smile on her face. We were very happy for her. The second came out not looking so pleased. The third came out angry.. she was telling her father that she told her fiance to be sure everything was done properly. And so on and so on. Out of 6 people I only saw 3 that came out of the room with smiles on their faces. Finally at 1200 came our turn. My fiance walked into the room and sat in front of the consulate interviewer, He was a white american man between 38 and 40 years old, resembled Richard Geere. He asked for my fiance to put her fingers into the finger print machine in portuguese. Her index fingers, then her thumbs ( Which did not process until the 4th try.) (LOL) Then he asked her, Where did you meet your fiance? and what year? How many children does he have? (she said 1, then she said 2) He said which one is it? She turned around to look at me and he said " Do not look at him" she said well... two and there anmes are ... He said ok, "What does he do for a living?", What do you plan to do when you get to the US?, Then he said, Ok, and directed the rest of the interview towards me, "He said, Ebon, it looks like you have had a history with the police, Tell me about it", I was in shock because I could see that he had my SF-86 (Background Investigation) sitting right in front of him", I told him the things that I admitted in my investigation" and he told me that he understood. Asked me, what were my future plans for my fiance, and if her children would accompany her at a latter date. I told him that we have discussed our plans for them to come at a latter date, He then asked me how was my portuguese because my fiance spoke no english and I said very good. He then told us that he wished us luck, and that her visa was approved. To go downstairs and pay the tax for shipping of the documents. 56 Reais. (30 Bucks american roughly or less.) Overall this was the most trying experience but Im glad that I was there because I know that she would not have been able to answer the questions that he had for me.

But we are done, and now we have to wait for her to have visa in hand. Next story, Entry into the US.

Embassy Review : Arrived at the federal building at 1030. Appt. 11:00 am. We got there and immediately went to the check - in window. The agent took our I-797C, (NOA) document and told us to have a seat. (The room was packed with people. I was thinking we were going to be there all day. But, the agent came out from the little room and told us that we had to go downstairs and into another room. We walked downstairs and saw there were 8 people there waiting for their appointment. We walked to the front of the office where there was another receptionist whom took our I797C and gave it to another agent in the back. About 10 minutes go by and a candidate came out from the room and talked to his family. By the time I turned my head, it was our turn. We went in and the agent told us to have a seat. He had our entire history of documents in front of him. He said that he was there to go over our documents and to see if everything was still in order. He asked for, my Drivers License, and my wife's ID. He asked her if she spoke english, and she said not very well. And he began with a red pen in hand. He asked her, Address, had we ever lived together before?, When we met, how may children she had, how many children I had, and their ages, if they were all by the same father (her) if she had plans on bringing them here, where we last lived, Her birth date, If she had ever killed anyone, had she ever been a prostitute, what groups she belonged to, had she ever done or sold drugs, been arrested, been to prison, ( All were yes no questions ) Me, If I had ever been arrested, What for, etc... Then he said, "OK, you will be notified in the mail." then asked if we had anything additional I wanted to add to the documentation. I told him that I did, and showed him our Photo Album from the first time we met to our wedding day to now. He asked when the photos were taken, and checked to see if we were in accordance with the dates. I also gave him our Filed Taxes from 2010, and a copy of bank statement, along with our health insurance documents. He then said, "Is there anything else you wish to submit with your documents?" I told him no sir, that should be all of it, He then said "You are approved" The documentation will be in the mail, Have a great week!
Harassment Level : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
