Consulate Review: Mumbai, India
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : January 6, 2010
Embassy Review : I went to the Consulate early morning at 7 as my interview was at 7:30am.
Waited in the stars & stripes lounge at VFS office after which the bus took
us to the consulate which is just down the road but you avoid the
troublesome long queue outside Consulate. After going through the security
checks they took my finger prints and asked me to wait. In a short while I
was called and the (Indian) lady officer gave me back my Birth Certificate &
Passport copy and asked me for Bank Draft & Financial support docs as VFS
did not ask for the same when I went in to submit my docs a week ago. After
I submitted the docs the lady asked me a few questions which I dont remember
now and also asked if I hold Visa for any other countries to which I replied
YES- UK tourist Visa. She asked for how long did I visit UK? I replied 10-12
days. She asked me to wait in the hall for my name will be called for the
interview. This was around 8am and I sat those agonising hour after hour
where I saw people give their interviews where each one took more than
45mins.
Soon after the clock struck 12 noon I was called upon I greeted the
American lady 'Good Afternoon' (rather sarcastically coz I was frustrated of
waiting for 4 hrs!!!) but stood there with a big smile :D She asked me which
language would I prefer to give the interview and I said 'English'. She
asked me if I can understand her clearly and I replied 'Perfectly' :P She
asked me so how did I meet my fiancee? I went on about how we met online
first and then later in person and how our relation grew. Then she asked
what does my fiancee's family think about me? Then she asked what does my
fiance do? What has she studied? I gave my answers promptly keeping a good
smile on my face. She asked me what do I do for living? She asked me if I
knew within how much time would i need to get married with this visa? I said
90days!! She nodded in affirmation and gave a big smile and told me the Visa
will be delivered by courier. Then while leaving she curiously asked me what
are our plans for marriage? She didn't ask me a single proof or scores of
documents me and my fiancee had been collecting since forever. I had around
2 huge folders & medical reports with me which I think she didn't care to
see at all and I was out of the interview within 5-10 mins
Make sure you have submitted complete documents and talk clearly so CO
understands you perfectly. My mantra was to keep a smile on my face when
communicating and it worked perfectly as I got her involved in my story
pretty good that she didn't care to see any proof of relationship.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
