The whole interview experience was extremely pleasant and there were no surprises. Our officer was extremely nice, and attempted to make jokes and asked about our trip abroad. There were two officers in our interview, one who was reviewing the officer doing the actual interviewing.
We didn't do much preparation in terms of the interview, other than gathering the required documents and our photos. We didn't have a lawyer and did our own filing with the help of this site.
The officer started with asking for state ID from both of us and my passport. He made a copy of everything in the room.
Aside from verifying information on the forms (ie. name, birthday, address) here are some questions that came up, which seem very basic:
* When were you married?
* How did you meet? Who made the first move?
* How long have you lived here together?
* How long were you married with previous spouse? Why did you get divorced?
We brought our custom wedding box full of photos. He asked about our photographer and made many personable remarks.
We gave him a subset of photos in a different envelope that included some from our wedding, honeymoon, family photos with parents.
He went over our other proof of relationship, which we had a large stack of (including: rental agreement, joint checking and savings accounts, car ownership, joint insurances: car, health, life, joint credit card statements, bills: water, electricity, cell phones, internet). He glanced over at the stack of bills and kept the following (so make a copy of these if need the original):
* statements for joint checking and savings accounts
* statements for joint credit card accounts
* copy of joint car ownership title
He went out of the room for 5 minutes and came back asking for my AP papers.
Then he informed us that we've been approved and should receive the green card within 45 days, but more likely, around 2 weeks time.
We told him that we will be going out of the country to visit my family in a week or so, he asked if we had tickets booked, after we said yes, he proceeded to putting the temporary green card stamp in my passport.
The whole thing went by like a breeze and again very pleasant. We had rescheduled our AOS appointment twice, and through it all, every interaction we've had with the Seattle field office had been very polite and accommodating. We're very impressed by how the whole operation is run, and how professional this government agency is. Maybe it's time other government agencies could take some lessons from them (imagine a smiling face when getting your driver's license... someday!). |
