Comments : 04/09/24: Attended interview; my husband was given a paper welcoming him to the United States of America and told that his passport would be mailed back to him with his visa in 2-3 weeks. I was a little confused because everyone else on here seems to have gotten their passport back within a week or even less. Checked the status immediately after and it says "Administrative Processing". This seems to be contradictory because he was told he was approved. I was wondering if this was normal or maybe they have to run a few more checks to verify info before issuing the visa, but they never mentioned it. I will post updates as we have them.

Update: Apparently this is completely normal. It was "issued" by Friday, just three days after the interview. By Monday it was sent in the mail.

At the embassy in Madrid, they said 2-3 weeks for the passport to be returned, but we got it back in 1 week! (interview on the 9th and passport delivered the 16th). You must then pay an immigrant fee, which was just increased to $235 (used to be $220) before you depart for the United States. Having completed that step, I can happily say we are all done with the whole process. Now we just have to get on a plane. :)

I probably won't be updating anymore now. However, if anyone has questions, please reach out. I tried to include everything I could because one of the ways I eased my anxiety was seeing what to expect based on previous timelines. I hope we can bring that same comfort to anyone going through this journey. Best wishes to all! :)

Embassy Review : No problems! My husband's interview went well and he said that everyone was very kind. The only thing is that you can't take your bag inside, as others mentioned. The best way to solve this is to leave your bag at your hotel (if you're coming from out of town). He stayed at the EasyHotel because it is affordable and they have lockers where you can leave your bag, and you can pay for them with your bank card if you don't have cash.

The first visit was a medical appointment and document review. You first go to the medical appointment, then get a chest x-ray at another location, and finally, go to the embassy at the time allotted (they tell you in a text message a couple of days before the medical appointment). They put everything they want you to bring in an envelope that you shouldn't open until the interview. In our case, it was just his birth certificate. They also tell you if you need to provide any additional documents, but we didn't.

Three weeks later was the interview. The wait was about an hour and a half. The interview was about 10 minutes and mostly in English. The passport was sent out a few days later and received exactly one week after the interview.

Rating : Very Good

We're hoping to get our interview letter this month, which according to other timelines should be on the last Friday of the month. I'll post an update when I have one since it might be useful to others in the same boat. :)

Our medical appointment and document review went well. Here's what my husband has to say about the experience: "It was very easy and the doctor was very nice, so don't be so worried about that part. Just be sure you have your vaccine records. The document review was also quite easy, just be sure you have somewhere to leave your luggage or backpack if you are coming from another city for the appointment. You can't use your phone and have to turn off all electronics inside."

I believe all the cases go into administrative processing until the VISA is actually printed onto the passport. Could you share a bit more about the interview? What questions did they ask and also how the process was? Was he told on the spot he was aproved? We are having our interview in Madrid soon. Thank you!

Thank you for saying that. We are a little nervous out over here but trying to be patient. The interview was relatively simple. They made him take an oath and asked him to speak in English. Then the rest of the interview was in English. They asked questions about his nationality because his nationality is not the same as his place of birth or residency (born in Venezuela, Colombia national, living in Spain since he was young). This led to a few questions about him and why he is applying with a Colombian passport. They asked about his relationship with the joint sponsor (my uncle) and also about where I (his spouse) live. That was about it. He was then told he was approved and welcomed to the United States; they handed him a paper with instructions about what to do next (courier service, entering the U.S., getting a SS #, etc.) They told him 2-3 weeks to get his passport back, but I thought based on other timelines it would be faster. Maybe they tell everyone that and it will end up being sooner. That's what we're hoping! Anyway, that's all I can think of now. I wish you the best and if you have any specific questions please let me know. :)

The visa was issued on Friday morning when I checked! So I think we should get the tracking information sometime this week. I'll let you know when we have the passport back so you have an idea of how long it took.

I completely understand! We were nervous too but pleasantly surprised at how kind the immigration officers were and how smoothly the whole experience went. I wish you all the best! Just breathe—you guys have got this and you're almost to the finish line! :)

Also, we did get the tracking number today from Correos and it says the passport will be delivered in one working day. So I think it should get here tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest (it's still in preadmission on the tracking number so I don't think Correos actually has it yet). I booked tickets to move, and we leave next week!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
