Embassy Review : |
Had an easy process at the embassy. My appointment was at 08:30, I arrived at 08:00 to a short line. Got to one of the two outside windows, handed over my passport and my DS-160. Got the passport back with a ticket nr attached and was instructed to move to security. Security was fast, efficient, friendly but very strict. Make sure you don't have backpacks or laptops on you - they cannot hold them for you. I had an AirTag, they held it at security.
After security I walked through a courtyard ("Follow the green lines"), there's security every step of the way so it's impossible to get lost. I sat down in the main hall in front of window 15-21. There's (uncomfortable) plastic chairs, a restroom, a clock, and two water fountains. My wait until I got called for my first step was about 30 minutes.
The first time you are called to a window, it is to check the documents. I spoke to a nice lady who attentively walked through all the files. I was correctly prepared so no issues there, but I was unable to go to my medical before the interview. This is not a problem. The lady checked my current address and prospective address in the USA. She also wrote down my phone number. She asked when I was planning to get married, I said I didn't want to make any plans until I had my visa in hand (as they advise). This was accepted. She gave me the flyer about domestic abuse (as required by law).
After all the document checks, she returned my passport and I was instructed to take a seat until I would be called up again to be interviewed. The wait was about an hour and fifteen minutes. I was lucky enough to chat with a fellow K1 applicant, we had fun exchanging our stories. I highly recommend this - everybody is nervous. Chatting with friendly people who know what you're going through really helps calm your nerves!
Then I got called for my second interview. I chatted with a man who clearly needed to be efficient. It was a business interaction, but not unkind. I noticed my answer to the first question was too long, so I kept my following answers a little shorter. I got the following questions:
-How did you two meet?
-What is your fiancés job?
-Where does your fiancé live?
-Are you going to live with your fiancé?
-Where is his family from?
-What is your job?
-Have you planned your wedding yet?
-Does your fiancé have family that also live in Florida?
He then tapped away at his PC (I believe all your responses are written down) and said to me "You're good, but I just need to check something about your file in the back. Stay here, I'll be right back".
I don't know what he verified, but after a few minutes he returned and he asked a few more questions (the last two questions of the list above). He then proceeded to explain that my interview was OK but that my application could not yet be approved because I had to go for my medical exam (which I expected). It was explained to me that my passport would be held and that I could expect it back within two weeks after my medical. He then gave me my original documents back and gave me a 221(g) slip.
And that was it! All in all it was a very smooth process. |

Timeline Comments: 3Hi
Congrats on your case being forwarded to the embassy.
I wanted to ask you, did you fill out DS160 prior to the case moving forward? When I did inquiry with NVC, they sent me invoice I’d and case number. When I search, it says to fill out DS160 for further processing. Please help
Thank you!
Hi there, thanks! You need to fill in your ds-160 after ceac says your transfer is "ready", so you don't have to do it for the file to be sent to the embassy/consulate.
The time it takes for the NVC to send your case to the embassy depends a lot on which embassy your case is being sent to. Some embassies are overwhelmed with cases which can make it take longer for the NVC to send your case over.
Thank you for your response.
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
