Consulate Review: Dominican Republic
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : June 23, 2021
Embassy Review : Our appointment was on 6/22/21 at 9:45 am. We arrived to the area around 9 am and found parking for 200 pesos in a nearby parking lot. There was a small office attached to the lot where we kept our personal belongings and a lady reviewed and organized our papers (not part of the embassy) for a total of 500 pesos.

We walked about five minutes to the embassy where we saw a long line. There was nobody providing instructions for which line to go to so my fiancé went to find someone at the front who guided us to the blue immigrant visa line, which was much shorter than the non-immigrant visa line.

We walked through security and into a separate building. Please note you can’t bring your cell phone, purse, electronics (Apple watch), water or food. Although, they do have water available inside. We were greeted and shown where to sit (by the bathroom) to wait to submit our papers. The building is comprised of a large waiting area, small front counter where you can print documents, and windows (with an office behind) where the employees and consular officers sit. We were told to go to a window and submitted our documents (medical exam, birth certificate, passport, I-134 form and police records. Then, we were told to sit in the waiting area. This was the difficult part as we waited for about two and a half hours and were very nervous.

Finally, my fiancé’s name was called on the speaker and we went to window 20 where we were greeted by an American woman who spoke English and Spanish. We were asked to raise our right hands and confirm everything in the application and said in the interview was the truth. My fiancé was asked to complete fingerprints and then given a paper on domestic violence. She asked my fiancé a few questions and then me (see below for list of questions.) Then, she asked us to converse in English to prove to her my fiancé could speak since we told her we mainly communicate in English. She did not ask for any other documents or proof of a relationship, although we showed her our wedding invitation (and brought a lot of photos with us.) After speaking with her for about ten minutes she told us his K1 visa was approved and would be ready to pick up at Jumbo in Punta Cana in about one week.

(I rated 4 stars because of the long wait. Many people who came after us were interviewed before us which was frustrating.)

Questions asked to petitioner:
Have you ever been married?
Do you have children?
How many times has your fiancé visited DR?
Where does she stay when she visits?
Where/how did we meet each other?
Where does your fiancé work?
Have you ever been to the US?
Do you have family in the US?
Have you ever applied for a visa before?
Did you have trouble with the police?
When will you marry?
What are your plans in US?

Questions asked to beneficiary:
Have you ever been married?
Do you have kids?
How did you meet?
What do you like about him?
Do you have sufficient income to support him while he is waiting for a work permit?
Rating : Good

Approval from USCIS valid for 4 months. Our expired on 1/29/2021. I called NVC and they said it would be extended, but I have received no official confirmation.

Hi Sara, have you received anything for your interview yet? Omg! I am so anxious about this whole process!!!

Me too!! No, I haven’t heard anything! On CAEC it shows our case was updated on April 19. I called the embassy and they said they are waiting for appointments to open up. Did you receive anything from the embassy?
Luis & Wendy on 2021-05-01 said:
Good morning! Unless it is the same I am using cgifederal.secure.Force.com. How are you accessing CAEC? Which number at the embassy are you calling? I am calling 1 (703) 988-3410. Any information you can share can be helpful. I have not gotten anything from the embassy at all. When we completed the Ds160 and I got the confirmation I went into that website I gave you and we scheduled the birometrics which he completed on the 4/19 ( paid $285.00 for that. But after that we have not gotten anything else.

Ok, it sounds like we are in the same situation. I paid the visa application fee online ($265.) How did you schedule the biometrics? Is that the fingerprinting done in Santo Domingo? And is that an additional fee? I've been checking our case status on: https://ceac.state.gov/ceacstattracker/status.aspx - They have updated the date a few times but it only tells me it's "ready" for interview. I called the embassy in DR on 4/15 at 1-829-956-5144. I press 2 - 4 - 1 - 1 for the options. I spoke with an agent who told me our case is ready. They are just waiting for more appointment times to open up. I also tried calling on 4/23 but waited on hold and then it hung up. I signed up for an international plan on Verizon, only to call DR for $10/month. Have you been checking other timelines? I've seen applications that were sent to the embassy after ours that already have interviews scheduled, which has been frustrating. It worried me that our application was skipped over, but now that I've heard from you, I don't think that is the case. My lawyer told me that they switched to an online system after COVID so people who submitted their application online are getting theirs processed much quicker that the people who submitted it earlier but by paper.

Good morning Sara! Sorry I did not respond before but I had a very Hectic weekend and I wanted to revisit my step so I can share it with you. Go to Ustraveldocs.com. You will get a pop up urgent notice( you can read if you want- then x it out) choose the Caribbean- República Dominicana ( make sure you choose the English part otherwise you will get it in Spanish) then go to apply for a us visa- create an account. I have not checked other timelines other than travel docs. Do you have any other? I don’t have a lawyer, I am doing this on my own. Let’s keep each other posted. We can share phone numbers if you’d like
Sara_Dom on 2021-05-03 said:
Ok, thank you! Honestly, the lawyer was a waste of $$$ so you’re not missing much! Yes, let’s keep in touch. My phone # is 573-934-0444.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
