Consulate Review: Tokyo, Japan
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : June 5, 2019
Embassy Review : Jotting down some notes that I wrote down from when my fiance had his interview last month.

For some background. My fiance's not a permanent resident/citizen of Japan so some (additional) items were / were not applicable. we had some questions in the preparation process and while I was able to easily get in touch with the embassy, I wasn't always able to get specific data personalized for our case. We never got a confirmation for the materials sent in per the instructions from the embassy. We didn't hear back back about the interview either and scheduled one.

His appointment was at 8:30. He arrived at 7:45 and there were already 7 people there. This was probably the result of the Embassy not holding interviews the past two Mondays due to the holidays. He took two hours altogether and left by 10:30am.

First, you through security and everything gets checked. Then, you go inside the compound and go through another security. You get a token number upon showing your DS-160 and passport. Then you enter the building and wait. You will get called by number and start a 3-step process.

Step 1: Documents will get checked and some questions will be asked. Be careful with the photos submitted. There are those photo booths but they only take coins, according to my fiance, so best to have coins with you.
Step 2: Fingerprint. This was an hour later after step 1.
Step 3: 10 min later, got called in for an interview. It lasted about 15 minutes. At the end of the interview, he was told that everything looks good and he should get his passport back by the next week. However, the other materials (photos for proof) will be mailed back at a later date. According to my fiance, all documents were reviewed.

My fiance had a positive experience with the interviewer. His advice is to not be intimidated when answering. The consular officer will be typing out your answer and taking notes so you may or may not get a response or reaction as you're speaking. It would also be good to be direct and logical with your answer. Also, it would make the process easier to have your pictures annotated.

Questions:
What's your fiancee's name?
Is she from Japan?
Where do her parents live?
What does she do?
Where do you live?
How long have you been living in Japan?
Who do you work for?
What do you two enjoy doing together?
Have you met her parents?
Who's this in the picture?
What countries have you lived in and traveled to?
What do your families think about you two as a couple?
What kind of wedding are you planning to have?

Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
