Consulate Review: Austria
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 22, 2019
Embassy Review : My interview was scheduled for 11am, so I made sure to be there a bit earlier since I've heard that it can get quite busy and lead to long waiting time. So I got the at 10.30am.
The officers were very friendly, asked why I'm here and checked if I had an appointment as mentioned to them. Make sure not to have any charging cables or electronic devices like a laptop or power bank with you because you'll get into trouble and they won't allow you to come in.

Once they have confirmed my appointment, the officers led me through a door and I was told to sit down and wait for them to call my name. There was a family in front of me at one of the windows. It wasn't busy at all, which I was very surprised of. Once the family sat down, they have called my name and I had to go to the same window as the family previously did before me.

At the first I handed in my passport and my appointment confirmation, same as some of the financial supporting documents like tax returns etc. which were required. I remember the lady didn't take everything, but it's possible that I had more than enough with me, which is always good! Be prepared. Other than that she was very friendly while going through my paperwork and very optimistic. It almost sounded like I would have gotten my K-1 visa already. Once she was done, I was told to sit down again and wait for my name to be called again.

I sat down and wanted to reorganize my papers but it didn't even take 2-3 minutes until my names was called once again. This time I had to go to the next window which was covered with a weird curtain. I assume because of privacy reasons. A friendly man greeted me while holding my passport and going through my papers. It didn't feel like an interview, more like a casual chitchat. All he asked me was "How did you met?" and "Did you make any plans for the wedding yet?". He ended the interview with congratulating me and wishing me all the best! Then I had to sit down again, just to be called once last time at the first window where I started off.

Since my medical exam was scheduled so close prior to my interview and the results were not ready yet (apparently this happens a lot and is very usual for Vienna), I had to go back the same week to pick up my results and take them back to the consulate to complete the whole package. It was a busy week especially since my process at the consulate was overlapping with Independence Day, so I had a small delay, but it wasn't a big issue. She also told me I'd get my passport back within 5 business days. Once it's ready, I'll get an e-mail and it'll be ready for pick up.

I was out the door of the consulate by 10.55am and 3 times total at the consulate to wrap up things, incl. dropping of my medical exam and picking up my passport. The staff was great!

POE Review: Dallas
Event Description
Entry Date : 2019-08-20
Embassy Review : When I arrived around 2pm it was quite busy. I totally forgot that most students with their F-1 visa were coming back or starting school very soon, so I was stuck in line for over an hour. I'm pretty sure I was the only K-1 visa holder too.

Finally my turn, I got to speak to the first officer and handed him my K-1 visa package. He was very friendly and chatty. I asked him if it's always that busy and he was laughing. Apparently this was nothing compared to other days. He took my fingerprints and picture, he also asked me about was our timeline and how long everything took to be processed while walking me to a separate room for processing after that. After saying friendly goodbyes with the officer, I took a seat and was told to wait till they call my name. There were a few more people waiting but it didn't worry me. I was prepared for a longer wait. Not even 10 minutes later, my name was called. The officer gave me my passport and said "You got 90 days to get married." and I was like "Is that it?" and he just nodded and pointed to the exit.

Pretty easy peasy, if you'd ask me. X3

Embassy Review : Our interview was scheduled for 8am. We were running a little bit late, which was very stressful but nobody noticed or said anything. I got really nervous because of being late but the officers were understanding. Because of COVID, they are are checking your temperature before proceeding into the actual lobby. They also direct you to put your purse and papers into a plastic basket just like at the airport so they can scan it and you need to walk through a scanner too! Once you're done with this security check, you continue to another officer who directs you to go to the next available counter, which was fairly quick without much waiting. A lady checked us in, took my picture and finger prints and also stamped my appointment notice. Once she was done, we were directed to go upstairs into the 2nd level where there was a much bigger lobby with a lot more people waiting for their appointment.

We handed over our appointment notice to the receptionist and was told to take a seat and wait for our name to be called. Our wait was much shorter than expected. After only 10 minutes or less my name was called by a female officer who greeted us friendly and let us know to follow her into her office. She swore us in and started going through our file, which became quite thick over the past few years. She requested my passport, the K-1 visa which I used to enter the country, and my Social Security Card, same as our marriage license. My husband also had to provide his ID. While she was busy with those, she asked me to provide her with some evidence which shows our daily life together as a married couple. I pulled out wedding pictures, day-to-day pictures, our current and past apartment lease, bank statements, joint health insurance and vet bills. She seemed satisfied with that and started going through the i-485, verifying everything including all the Yes/No questions. I was very nervous at the beginning and blanked out when she asked about our previous address since we have moved right after applying for AOS but those Yes/No questions calmed me down a little at the end.

She then asked if we had questions about ROC and started wrapping up things without asking any additional questions, which kinda surprised us. We expected some relationship specific questions to be asked but none of that happen. She opened the door to the hallway and proceeded towards the lobby where we came from! And that's pretty much it. On the way out, we noticed a lot more people coming into the USCIS office, so it seemed like we just had beaten the rush!

In the evening of the same day, my status changed to "New Card has been processed" and we knew I got approved for the 2 year greencard. Case switched to "Case was approved" the next day! Overall a good experience. In and out within 20-25 minutes.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
