We arrived at the office and waited outside until 15 minutes before our interview. We went through security and then to the waiting room for USCIS. The receptionist looked at our appointment letter to check us in. We waited about 35 more minutes until the officer came out and called my husband. I freaked out because they separated us, which is not something I had heard about happening before in our office. The officer gave me a paper to fill out and took my husband for about 20 minutes alone. I wrote my name, date of birth, social security number, how I met my husband, when we got engaged, who was at our wedding, his siblings names, my parents’ names, my job, if we have kids, and I had any other marriages. They asked him the same questions and then compared the answers. The officer had me join them at the end. He asked me more questions, like some of the same ones from the paper, and also how many times I went to Brazil, how many times my husband visited the USA before moving here, where my husband was born, and where he used to live before moving here.
As far as the documents collected: The officer took our joint tax return, any proof that we lived together (lease, photocopies of our photo IDs with the same address, bank statement). He DID NOT Take anything about our health insurance, our joint credit card, our joint cell phones, or anything related to our trips together since my husband arrived here. He DID also ask for photos. I had printed 14 photos and also offered to show him photo albums. He did not want to look at the photo albums or keep a copy of our holiday card, but he kept the photos I printed and asked my husband to say who the other people in the photos were. He asked about our gross household income to verify we met the requirements. He asked about my husband’s job, but did not take any documents about verifying either of our employment.
The officer said he did not have our medical. My husband had done the medical in Brazil 3 months before we applied for his AOS, so I Knew his medical was still valid but the officer was confused. He made a copy of our original vaccine worksheet from Rio de Janeiro and said he would check with someone else about it. He said we were “approvable†and he just needed to finish the background check and confirm about the medical.
I started off extremely nervous about being separated, but in the end I could see our officer was just very very thorough. Fortunately, on hour after we left, the case already changed to approved on the ap!!! I am so relieved and happy for my husband (and both of us!) |

Embassy Review : |
I did not attend the interview but this is what my fiance told me:
He had scheduled his appointment for 9:40am, and he arrived at 9:10am.
In the review of documents, they took all of the required documents, and also a copy of my passport (me being the petitioner), a copy of my birth certificate, a copy of my divorce decree, and ALL of the financial support docs I sent (including: the affidavit of support, 1040 tax return, 3 most recent W2s, three most recent IRS tax transcripts, a letter from my employer indicating my position and salary, and my last 6 months of bank statements - I was surprised they kept ALL of these documents). They did NOT ask of further proof of relationship (we had sent a lot in the initial petition). A photo is no longer required, since they use the one they take at the CASV.
He ended up being the last person interviewed for the day.
As other reviews mention, there was a long wait to be interviewed, and then the interview was extremely easy and fast. He was asked:
-What is your fiancee's name?
-When did you meet your fiancee?
-How did you meet both online and in person?
-Did you start dating immediately after you met?
-How many times did she come to Brazil?
-How many times did you go to the USA?
-Did you ever overstay your visa?
-When did you get engaged?
Then approved and it was done! He said that the consulate officer was very nice and received his answers well. Our visa is already on Issued status at CEAC one day later.
He also noted two other things worth mentioning from overhearing other interviews:
1) The consulate agents want to get specific answers to questions about dates and numbers. For example, if they ask "How long ago did you meet?", don't say "A long time ago" - know the month and year. If they ask, how many visits did you have? Know the exact number, not just "a few visits."
2) He did not observe anyone being denied outright for the visa. He did observe that some people were told they needed additional documents before being approved. Some people were missing police clearances, and some people's medical packets had not arrived from doctors offices in other cities, for example. If you do medical in Sao Paulo or any other city that is not Rio, make sure to allow enough time for the results to get to the consulate before your interview.
Good luck to everyone!

Wow thank you! That’s really really helpful! I’m so excited!!! :) :)
Looks like the dates may need to be 4/22 :-))
Ok it’s really May 1, for real!!!
We will see you there!! Ours is on 7/2 as well!!
I dont show that they have received it yet though. Received date should be this Friday to next Tuesday. I’m following it on the DHL hack
Oh cool!!!! Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to attend the interview, but please let me know if you'd like to connect with my fiance! He'd love to have someone to meet up with. He's doing biometrics the day beforehand and spending one night in Rio.
My case status is now showing as ready on CEAC. Hopefully yours updates soon.
I've been following you and mwkaasj. My fiance's interview is also July 2nd. His name is actually João, and will be there by himself as I'm unable to attend.
I sent you a private message, Emw!!!

Please let us know if you get the Packet 3 email. We haven't yet. Thanks!!
We haven't yet either. From what I gather, it should come end of this week. Keep you posted.

Your case has to be sent to the consulate in Rio. The day after it’s sent, you can schedule the interview. Did you check your case status in the CEAC site?

Thank you! I'll post a consulate review as soon as I can drag more info out of my fiance, since I did not attend!!
Contrats on getting the Work Authorization approved. Was the Advance Parole approved as well? Junior and I just sent in the i485 packet yesterday.
Hi Michael! I’m glad to hear you survived k-1 and have moved on to the next phase! Yes, advanced parole was also approved. USPS tracking has the card arriving tomorrow :) I hope your work permit and AP are fast also!
Thank you!!! Some i485’s are getting approved in three months. I hope ours is one too... others longer.
Yeah the field office here for DC is super slow :( so I’m really glad the work permit came, we need it!!!
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
