Consulate Review: Guangzhou, China

Embassy Review : Path to the Consulate:

My wife and I were both amazed at how quickly and, dare I say, easily, this went for her. We arrived into Guangzhou the day before and stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, which is an easy 10-minute walk across the Flower City square, down Zhu Jiangxi 6th Street, across Huaxia Road, at right to the North Entrance of the Consulate.

Arrival at the Consulate:

The appointment was at 0930 and the instructions said to arrive at that time AT the Consulate. However, there was a long line and we chose to arrive about an hour early. The guard at the gate looked at our appointment letter and allowed my wife entry. I walked back across the street to the R&F Building (with all the life-sized bronze statues of plus-sized women) to the NE corner and sat down in the Starbucks to wait.

After about an hour of waiting in line and once inside the Consulate, there was an inner security scan similar to that in an airport.
My wife had brought a plastic, segmented folder with all of her documents and nothing else. She said that Security would keep your umbrella for you, if needed. After passing Security, she went to the third floor Immigration Department (Section A) to get her interview #. This is where the staff inspected all of her white book documents. They kept the photo copies of all the white book documents, passport photos, and her passport. They returned the originals white book documents. She then arrived at section B about 1020 and waited about an hour-and-a-half for her interview. There were about 200-300 people there also waiting.

Interview:

She went to a window at one of the counters when her number was called and spoke to a female agent. The agent was very friendly and had reviewed her case thoroughly. The agent took her fingerprints and asked her to raise her right hand and swear to tell the truth. The questions were like this:

1. What is your name?
2. Who is the petitioner?
3. Where did you meet?
4. How many children does he have?
5. What are the children's names and ages?

Stamp. Approved!

I want to think that my preparation of all of the documents had a big part in the ease of approval. I think that if everything is in order, that the agents are quite happy to approve the visa.

Waiting for her to return:

At about 11:30 I went to the south gate of the consulate to wait for my wife to return. Even though there was a thick haze of pollution in the sky, it was very hot, so I opened an umbrella to deflect some of the heat. Thank God I brought that umbrella or I would have been soaked by the time she arrived. About 20-30 minutes later, my wife came walking along the long, straight path from the building exit to the gate. I was able to get a nice video of her as she approached and capture the moment when she told me that she was approved.

Afterwards we went to a nice lunch in the K11 building, B2 level and returned to the hotel for a nap in the air-conditioned room.

Woo - Hoo!
Rating : Very Good

Will be traveling to China for 6 months beginning in December of 2018. Is it worth getting a work visa and then trying to go directly through the Consulate?

Hi, Did you submit an I-129 petition for K3 visa at the same time as your I-130? Thanks and good luck for the interview!
Frank-n-Tina on 2019-05-21 said:
Hi, Julien. Yes, we did. The USCIS rejected the application because they said the processing time of the I130 was about the same as the K3. The USCIS does not approve K3 visas any more. But they did waive the fee to apply for the K3. You can always try. Just file them together. We are waiting for our train to Guangzhou now. The interview is tomorrow. Kind regards, Frank

Hi Frank and Tina, Hope all went well yesterday. I wanted to ask if the Visa Left Date in any way reflected the date that NVC has posted on their web site for processing of the visa applications. They note on the web site that it is about three weeks to process the visa applications but I am not sure if that is from the date they receive them or the date they note they are processing them, the time difference between the two is three weeks.

Hi John and Mei, We were approved very quickly at the interview, so I would call that ‘going well’! Re the NVC processing date, that was a frustrating time for us. It took the NVC 5 weeks just to acknowledge that they had received the package from the USCIS. That was all dead time. Then it took them an additional three weeks to just enter us into the CEAC online system. It doesn’t look like that is normal, but it was the case for us. After we paid our fees and submitted the documents, the process went much quicker.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
