Consulate Review: Guyana
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : March 29, 2018
Embassy Review : -Our interview we scheduled for 8:30am. We arrived at 8:00am to join a short line to have our names verified on the list. We were then told to wait outside where we had to remove our cell phones, turn them off, and place them in a bin to carry into the security check. We were told to enter one at a time, send our things through the scanner, walk through the metal detector, then we were given a locker to place our belongings.

-We entered the Consulate and were told to sit in a specific row. We waited for our names to be called. The first time our name was called, was for verification of all the documents. I was asked if I was the petitioner and one-by-one was asked for specific documentation: passports, birth certificates, letters of intent to marry, passport photos, and the I-134 and supporting documentation. I walked with too much documentation as I wanted to make sure I had everything: Tax Transcripts for 2016 and 2015, a letter from my employer, my employment contract, bank statements for 18 months, and a copy of my 2017 tax return that I had filed the previous week. The only thing they took was the letter from my employer and my 2016 tax transcript. Then, all of a sudden, the woman asked how we wanted to pay the visa fee? My fiancé and I explained that we had already paid the visa fee as it was a requirement to book the appointment. My fiancé said that we may have it in the car, then she gave him the Domestic Violence pamphlet and told us to have a seat. A few minutes later we were called back to the same woman and the woman told me that I needed to go out to the car to get the proof of payment. I had to go back through security, go outside, come back in through security again with the proof of payment. Thankfully, my fiancé kept the proof of payment and had it in the car. After submitting proof if payment, we were told to have a seat.

-After waiting, we were called to the back for our interview. We were interviewed by a White American Male and he asked me straight away if I was the petitioner? I said yes, and he proceeded to ask us how we met? I looked at him and said should my fiancé answer all the questions or can I chime is as well? He smiled and said either of you can answer the questions. I explained to him how we met, he asked why my passport indicated that I hadn't been to Guyana since 2016 and I explained to him that we had visited each other in other countries. He asked where I was staying in Guyana and if my fiancé and I were staying together. At first I thought he was asking for my address in the U.S. so I gave him my address in the States and my fiancé fave him his address in Guyana, which caused us all to laugh. He asked about my finance's daughter and explained that she had one year to join or we could file a different form after the one year. He asked why my fiancé was not interested in taking his daughter at this time. I then asked the interviewer if the one year for his daughter to join was from the date of the interview or the date of point of entry? He said that he was not exactly sure, but that it probably didn't matter since we were more than likely going to be approved today. He asked me how long I was going to be in the country, then he asked if my fiancé read the Domestic Violence waiver and that was that. He said, "Congratulations, you have been approved, you can come back on Wednesday at 1pm to pick up your visa." We were all smiles as we left.

-We were done and on our way by 9:45am. As long as you are truthful and have nothing to hide, the interview is the easy part.

-We went back on Wednesday at 1pm and had the visa in hand by 1:15pm.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
