Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : February 16, 2017
Embassy Review : Our interview was scheduled for Wednesday, February 8, 2017. Because it was Montreal in winter, we booked flights from Vancouver, BC to arrive on Monday, so we had a "bumper" day in case we had weather delays. We were good, so we had an extra day in Montreal to enjoy.

We brought all the documents that were requested in our appointment confirmation email. The text is after the review, for reference.

In addition, we brought a binder which contained the following additional documents:
- Copies of everything from the I-129F filing
- The sponsor's divorce certificate (copies)
- All previous action documentation (NOA1, NOA2, etc.)
- Receipt of visa payment
- Additional income verification (letter from employer, letter from bank)
- Packet 4 instructions

Our appointment was for 9:30 am. We arrived a bit later than we wanted - at about 9:15. We checked in at the door, were given our number with sorting instructions for our documents, and were asked to stand outside in a line against the glass to wait for security. At security inside, they took all electronics from us - no big deal. The folks there were cool. We were both admitted with no issues - sponsor and beneficiary.

Then, we went downstairs to an elevator up to the 19th floor. After leaving the elevator, we entered a large, mostly open room with some chairs on the floor for waiting and different windows, like you'd see at a DMV. We were called 2 minutes before our appointment, which gave us no time to get everything out of the binder. My fiancee (the beneficiary) went up to the window to hand over paperwork at window 3. The sponsor is not allowed at the window.

She spent about 12 minutes at the window, handing over paperwork. The lady at the window was very impatient with her, and a little brusque. In addition to the documents required, she also asked for my (the beneficiary's) divorce certificate - good thing I had a copy - and my fiancee's name change certificate (she had changed her name after her divorce). She grumbled about not having the original present, but let it go and took the copy. My fiancee also handed over all the supporting financial documentation, although it wasn't apparent that she needed more than the 2015 tax return transcript. They NEVER asked for additional evidence of relationship beyond the intent to marry; probably worthless to bring more along unless there's an issue with your case.

After that window, she went back to the waiting area. After about 3 minutes, she was called up for the interview at window 8. The gentleman there was friendly, and asked how we met, a little about what she does for a living, and asked if she ever had any trouble entering the U.S. previously. The interview was about 10 minutes long, and was really the easiest part of this whole visa process. The interviewers are friendly and put you at ease.

She was then given a generic "Welcome to the USA" letter and told that she'd receive her visa along with the sealed packet for her point of entry via courier. The interviewer confirmed her mailing location, and sent her on her way.

Total time in the building, from start to finish, was about 28 minutes. It was super smooth overall and fast.

On February 15, the package arrived at the post office in Vancouver, just one week after the interview!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
