Consulate Review: Chennai, India
Review Topic: K3 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : July 6, 2007
Embassy Review : Overall it was quite easy. This was for a K3 interview in Chennai. My interview was scheduled for 9:30am. I arrived at 8am which was unnecessary. I was the first person in line, and had to wait outdoors for another 40 minutes. Don't worry about showing up all that early. One by one they begin letting people in. Do not bring any cosmetics with you nor any mp3 players or cell phones. Only necessary documents. They'll check your interview letter outside and then you'll go through security inside.

Once getting through security, they send you back out of the building to a different building. This is the Immigrant Visa section. Nearby in the same building is also the nonimmigrant visa section - much more crowded. Here you wait in line for one of the available counters. It's not very crowded in the immigrant visa section. At the counter, they ask you to give your police clearance, affidavit of support, passport copy, and all original certificates and documents (marriage cert, birth cert, etc.) They take all your documents and give you a token to wait for your token to be called. But they do not call the tokens in chronological order - it's pretty much random.

The interview does not take place in a private room or something. It takes place right at the counter that you've already stood up once before. My entire interview took five minutes. Be confident of your answers. In my case, they made me feel very comfortable. The few questions they asked were - Who is your petitioner? How long were you married? Is this an arranged marriage or love marriage? Were you engaged before this? What subjects do you teach in your job? Are you planning to work in USA (my answer was no not necessarily, as a prior form asked for this as well). At the end, the same woman said "Welcome to the USA, your Visa is approved. You'll receive your Visa by courier within five days." We received it within four days. We left the consulate by 1:30pm. They do take fingerprints right at the counter, just so you know.
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
