POE Review: Miami
Event Description
Entry Date : 2017-01-09
Embassy Review : Arrived at the Miami airport with my fiance after a long flight. We asked which immigration line we should go through and they said we could go through the visitor line together. We waited about 30 minutes to be called to a booth. I asked the officer to speak Spanish as my fiance's English is not fluent. Since it was Miami I assumed that wouldn't be a problem, however even though the officer told us he was from Puerto Rico he refused to speak Spanish and I had to translate the whole thing. Finace tried to give him the envelope that he received at the embassy and the officer told him to take his hands out of the backpack... he didn't want to see any documents. The officer then proceeded to talk for 15 minutes about how happy he was that Trump won the election and pretty soon people like "him" (my fiance) wouldn't be able to come to the US at all. He then spent the next 10 minutes grilling us about how we met and when and where we planned to get married. He also criticized me for having to go to another country to find a husband and stated multiple times that our marriage would never work. I told him it seems impossible, but we know it could only have been a God thing. It seems crazy to meet your future husband in another country, but nothing is impossible with God. He rolled his eyes and said he was only going to stamp the passport because he was required to by law. I asked him for a third time about the documents from the embassy and he got angry and told us to wait in front of the booth. After a few minutes someone came and led us to a room where we waited for two hours before my fiance was called to a window and given a paper about his rights and responsibilities to get married. It turns out the first guy didn't even have clearance to stamp the passport. Overall it was a long and very difficult process. I was offended by the amount of prejudice there was especially in Miami where a large part of the population is latino. I was also disappointed that no one spoke Spanish as that was a major reason we decided to enter through Miami. We were lucky not to miss our flight, but we used up most of our 7 hour layover going through immigration.
