Consulate Review: Mumbai, India
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : June 7, 2016
Embassy Review : People who had interview date as June 06 2016 at 7:30am had a bizarre experience at the Mumbai Consulate as all the systems crashed at around 8:30am and no one was able to give a definite answer as to when system would be back. We were eventually sent home and asked to come the next day.
I had already finished the first part of the interview process for the CR1 where I was given a token number and then sent to a window where an Indian officer collected all documents including passport, birth certificate (original + photocopy), police certificate (original) and Marriage certificate (photocopy). She then verified my details in the system and asked for my cell phone number. After that I was asked to wait and soon the systems crashed. Since some of us had already submitted the documents, we were given the option of leaving and coming back the day after (something which everyone ended up doing eventually). Before leaving, they put a stamp on the DS-260 confirmation page which said that all documents had been submitted and interview was rescheduled to 7:30am the next day.
Next morning, after we entered the consulate, we were arranged according to the token numbers from the previous day and then given new token numbers. Since I had already submitted my documents, I just had to await my turn for the interview with an American officer. In the first round, all those requiring translation assistance were called. My turn came at around 9:15am. After exchanging some initial pleasantries, the officer (white, mid-thirties) asked me the following questions:
1. who is calling you to the States? (husband)
2. What does he do?
3. What does he live in?
4. Was yours a love or arranged marriage? (love)
5. Where did you meet? (college)
6. Who asked whom out? Why?
7. Are your parents cool with your marriage?

Before I knew it, the interview was over and the officer told me my visa was approved. I was prepared to show all kinds of documents and photos but before I was even able to lay my things out at the counter, we were done. It took less than five minutes.
So all in all, despite the bumpy start to the process, the interview part went fine.
Tips for Mumbai Consulate:
1. You are allowed to carry water bottles inside and should definitely carry one as you do not know how much time you will have to wait. They have drinking water fountains inside but it's hard to drink water from there with dribbling some down your clothes first.
2. Eat something and come for the interview, one lady almost fainted as she hadn't had anything to eat or drink. There aren't any eating places around the consulate. There is Hotel Trident (a five- star) and the coffee shop is open 24 hours I think.
3. Be prepared to wait for a long time. Mumbai is one of the busiest consulates. I carried a book to pass the time.
4. Even if your appointment letter states that you should be at the consulate not more 15 minutes before interview time, you should go there at least 45 minutes before time. This is especially true for the first slot of interviews. On the 6th, we were inside the consulate by 7:05am for the 7:30 slot while on 7th were inside by 7am.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
