Event Description

Embassy Review : I just wanted to say Thank you to the VisaJourney community in helping me with my K1 Fiancé Visa case. This forum has been a great amount of help in answering all my questions and guiding me and I wouldn’t be able to do this on my own without the community help.

6:15 Arrived and we were about the 7th one in line.

7:00 Security started letting 3 people in at a time. This is where you will surrender your phones, electronics and large purses.

7:30 Once inside, you are to queue up by Window 7 to get a number ticket.

8:10 Our number was called and we were asked to submit all the necessary documents. We had all the paperwork except the actual Police Record, only the receipt showing that we ordered it but couldn’t come on time. The officer was OK with that and had us take a seat to wait for our number to be called again for fingerprinting. All applicants were directed to the restrooms to clean their hands for fingerprinting.

8:45 Our number was finally called for fingerprinting.

While waiting, I was able to listen in on snippets of the interviews that were before us. Most of the cases were parents applying to live abroad with their children but there was one K1 applicant who attended the interview alone and passed with only like 5 questions asked. She was so happy she cried. Those that passed walked away with a blue slip and tears of joys. It really felt like I was at an American Idol audition as we all quietly cheered for the passing applicants while trying not to choke on our own nervousness at the same time.

9:35 Finally! Our number was called to Window 5 and our interviewer was a young American man who spoke Khmer really well. He kindly greeted us and asked me when I will be going back to the States and asked that I have a seat at the waiting area and will call me back up if needed. As I sat and waited, I tried my best to listen in on the interview but I couldn’t really hear much on top of the small talks and my thundering heartbeat. (Later, I learned that he interviewed my fiancé in Khmer and asked him all the same questions he asked me. So, if you’re attending your fiancé’s interview, it’s really important to go through your answers beforehand since they use it to compare accuracy.) When he finally called me back to the window, he asked me if I spoke Khmer (yes) and proceeded with interviewing me in English with the following questions (not in this order):
- Where am I staying at during my visit in Cambodia?
- Who do I live with at the States?
- Where do I plan to get married?
- How come I didn’t have an engagement ceremony in Cambodia?
- How and when did I meet my fiancé?
- How did we know each other?
- When and how did he propose?
- Where did I get the ring from?
- How many siblings do we each have?
- Are our parents still alive?
- Why did I first visit Cambodia?
- (Based on my answer) he asked how our parents knew each other.
- How do we usually communicate?
- What school do I go to and what am I studying? (*I was so nervous, I forgot!)
- What does my fiancé do (job)?
- He then asked my fiancé if he had ever applied for another visa (yes, Diversity Visa) and did he applied for it after or before he met me.

As he’s asking, he was also typing away so there were awkward moments of silence. Then, he pulled out a pink slip of paper and said since we were missing the Police Record, he has to wait for us to bring it in for further processing. Since he wasn’t cleared on whether we passed or not, I asked him straight out, if we passed. He said as long as the Police Record is cleared, he didn’t see any reason why he wouldn’t pass us, so yes! we passed! I couldn’t hold my excitement as I hugged my fiancé! We thanked him and even though we didn’t walk away with the blue slip, we were ecstatic to know we just passed the most difficult part of this journey.

*6 days later, the Police Record was ready and my fiancé went to drop it off at the Embassy and in turn, they gave him the lovely blue slip stating that his visa will be ready for pick-up 10 days later.

My piece of advice: act like you’re talking to a friend (this should cut down on the nervousness) and go through all the questions beforehand posted by other reviewers. Have plenty of evidence and be confident! To everyone that’s on the same journey as I, I wish you all the best luck!
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
