My husband and I arrived at 7:30 for his 8AM interview. From the taxi, we proceeded to the cue. We were near the front of the line. We had heard NOT to bring any cellphones or anything that would have to be checked in ---as things have gone missing.
I had a letter from my Congresswoman (who was following our case)stating that I could attend the interview. I knew that ultimately this would be at the discretion of the Embassy. I carried the letter with my passport. I was allowed inside. I was stunned at how easy this was.
There were two lines...one for immigrant visas and one for nonimmigrant. The immigrant was line was significantly shorter. Once inside, we were seated in the immigrant section, the Embassy staff (Indian) made sure that our documents were in order...interview appointment letter, DS 260 letter, medical report, police clearance certificate, etc. and then handed them back to my husband.
We waited approximately 20 minutes for the FIRST counter to open and he was an Indian staff member who went over and took all my husband's documents. I was not allowed to stand with my husband but asked politely to have a seat. He asked my husband some questions about himself and me...my name, birthdate, my profession, where I lived in the US, etc. Then he was given the domestic violence handout to read and he sat back down. Then we waited for the next part which was the actual interview.
We waited about 15 more minutes and then were called up to the interview counter where there was only an America man. Some of the other counters had an American with an Indian staff member. The American was very kind. He allowed me to stay standing next to my husband. He swore in my husband.
When he asked who the petitioner was, my husband said "my wife" and I raised my hand and smiled. He asked my husband about TEN questions...about where we met, when, the circumstances, etc. He asked him some questions about the domestic violence handout ---to make sure he understood its contents. He asked about our wedding. My husband showed him our photo album and we had so many photos from so many different places with different friends and family. The American asked me where I was from, if my family had attended the wedding, etc.
All of a sudden, he said "congratulations, you have been granted a visa to the United STates". My husband threw his palms together and said "thank you thank you thank you". I did the same and became very tearful and hugged my husband. The American interviewer did the same.
Our appointment was at 8AM and we were finished by 10. My advice is to get an EARLY appointment while the staff are still fresh in the AM. It was a surprisingly EASY and very good experience.
