Consulate Review: Kuwait
Review Topic: EB-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 20, 2014
Embassy Review : Our interview was on September 24th, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Most people at that time (about a dozen or so, other than us) were either US citizens. Started at the first window with a pleasant Arab lady who prepared the documents, verified some facts and returned the X-rays to us. Second window was another lady who took fingerprints from me and my wife, but not the kids (all under 14 years).
Third window was the formal interview. First half hour was formal paperwork, oaths and returning originals to us. Second half hour was grilling me over visa qualifications, including very detailed questions about my research results and potential applications, and their significance. At the end of this part, the CO said the petition cannot be approved for lack of a tenure track academic position. I spent the next half hour, first explaining to the CO that he was looking at the wrong EB-1 subcategory in his manual, and that my specific case is EB-1A which did not require a job offer at all. I then went through a step-by-step explanation of the requirements of this particular category and how I qualified for it. You can imagine how stressful this part was on me and on my wife.
At the end, the CO relented and declared he was satisfied with my qualifications. He still requested an un update letter from the university I'll be joining initially as an adjunct professor, as a proof of my commitment to continue work within my field of expertise. I hand-submitted that letter the following day to the embassy. Two weeks later, I sent an email copy of the letter and inquired about the case. A few days later I was asked to bring in my passports, and the visas were issued the following day. Visas and packets were picked up 3 business days later. Each of us had their own visa packet.

POE Review: Washington DC
Event Description
Entry Date : 2014-10-22
Embassy Review : Arrived at Dulles just before 7:00 a.m. and ours was the only arrival at the time. There were very few passengers on the visitors line and we were at the counter in no time. The officer called in to figure out what to do, then slit open each of our packets, peaked through without taking anything out then stamp-validated our IVs. He did take the customary digital photo and fingerprints.
He then directed us to collect our luggage and head to the secondary inspection room. There was a porter who approached us when he noticed the dozen or so suitcases and took care of all of them. At secondary, there was a gentleman ahead of us. When our turn came, our packets were opened, rearranged then a new form for each of us was filled and we were asked to sign it and add an inked index print. The officer was very gentle with our kids. He finger printed our 11 and 13 year old kids and when he noticed the disappointment of the younger ones, he made a show of taking theirs as well to appease them. Afterwards we were sent to the customs counter where a few pieces were scanned before the customs form was collected and we were waved through, even though we declared a large 5-digit valuation of our luggage. The first officer did write something across the form with a yellow highlighter.
The whole process was smooth and pleasant and took about 30-45 minutes, mostly because there were six of us with six packets and loads of luggage. By the time we were done the entire customs area was deserted except for the six of us. We were into the main terminal well ahead of our connecting flight as we planned a three-hours connecting time.
