No interview - I made an Info Pass appointment to get passport stamp so I could travel while lifting conditions paperwork still pending a year and a half later. Found out approved 2 days prior to my info pass appointment. So I have the stamp, and 10 year card is on the way! |

APPROVED!!!!! *massive squealing and happydance*
Firstly, A big thank you to all my fellow VJ'ers for all the information and making this process a lot less stressful!
I had to travel to Montreal which is about 7hours away from where I live, in pretty terrible weather. It took us 12 hours to drive there, 9 hours to get home. But we made it safely and that's all that matters. My mom went with me on the road trip because my fiance and I have planned for him to come up at the end of the month with his parents for a going away party and I should have the visa before then. I will travel with him and his parents back to the US after their visit. If for some reason the visa isn't in my hand by then (a full month after my interview) I will fly down a bit later but I should be able to travel with them by then and they are coming up for a visit regardless.
We stayed at the Travelodge hotel on Rene Levesque Blvd. Cheap room and a fairly short walk (less than 10mins to walk) to the consulate. Room was tiny but it was clean so we have no complaints.
Arrived out front of the consulate at 7:50am (interview was scheduled for 830). It was freezing and there were about 10 people in line already. And a whole lot more showed up shortly after. They began letting 2 people in at a time. A woman inside takes a look at your passport and your confirmation letter with your appointment and reference ID # (on the email or print out of your appointment confirmation). She puts a sticker on your passport and writes this number on it and directs you to the next door where you wait in line to go through security.
When security is ready for you, they wave and you enter the next door. Similar to an airport, you put all your stuff in a bin, empty pockets, and walk through a metal detector. I have metal rods in my back from a surgery years ago and there were no issues. Took all of 30seconds. Of course make sure you don't bring anything like cell phones, electronics, USB drives or anything on their list of items you can not take in with you. Leave them in your hotel or have someone not joining you inside the consulate hold them for you.
After security, they directed me through a door and down a set of stairs to a room full of chairs by an elevator. Once there was a sizeable group of people someone came and brought us on the elevator. There were definitely a few of us right there at the back door ready thanks to previous VJ'ers comments! There was no one at the desk or a place to get numbers yet when we got upstairs so we were told to sit. When a lady came out and asked to see our passports I somehow managed to be the first one, had my passport looked at, and sent to window 14A to get a number. I was number A1. Told to sit til number was called.
My number was the first one called and sent to window 1. Here I was asked for all of the following documents one at a time.
-Passport + photo copy of biographic data page
-my original birth certificate and photo copy
-Original police certificate. I had a copy of it as well which she gave back to me.
-Sealed medical envelope. She handed me back a disk with my chest x-ray results to keep for my records.
-Letter of intent to marry from the petitioner signed within 30 days of the interview.
-I134 Affidavit of support (I included the form I134, a copy of his 1040 and W2 from the previous year, A copy of his insurance policy summary (where we got the number for his policy and cash surrender value for the I134 form), A letter from his employer stating position and salary as well as 17weeks worth of pay stubs, A letter from his bank with amount in his account and 6 months of bank statements showing regular deposits of his salary. Not all of this was absolutely necessary as he makes more than the 125% poverty guideline for a household of 2 but I wanted to play it safe and have more than enough so they didn't delay the visa requesting more info.
My digital fingerprints were taken and I was told to have a seat and wait for the number to be called again for the interview.
I waited about 2minutes and my number was called to window 7 which is down the hall a little ways in a small room with another booth/window.
The woman greeted me and asked me my fiances name. I replied with first and last, and then added his middle name is Paul, in case she wanted that as well. She asked how we keep in touch living far away. I briefly described talking online via Skype mostly, playing a few video games together online as well, facebook and occasional emails. Some phone calls but mostly Skype to save long distance charges. She asked if we visit in person. I explained that yes, multiple times. He has visited me here in Canada once and I have visited him in Texas 3 times over the course of the past year. Both of us have met each others families. She asked what he does for work, and what his employers company is called. He is a software developer and I had no problem giving the company name and describing briefly what he does specifically. She asked how long we've known each other. I told her we had met online, while playing a game..neither of us looking for a date/relationship. We became friends and talked occasionally through the game and facebook but we decided to begin dating about a year after meeting online. We had no yet met in person at that time but definitely wanted to and agreed to give a relationship a try on September 30th 2012. We met in person for the first time that december. We've been together for a little over a year and met in person multiple times since then. She smiled at me and said I have to ask.. what video game let you to meeting... And had a good chuckle when I had to admit we met playing World of Warcraft. She laughed and said don't worry it's more common than people think and told me she was approving my visa!
I had a ton of documents, pictures, and proof of our ongoing relationship and she didn't even look at any of it. I answered every question she gave me well enough and they were all things that you should know about the person you are going to marry so it was easy. She was very nice, and even laughed with me a bit about the whole, "yes..I met my fiance while playing video games online" business. I had a duplicate copy of everything with me and way more than I really needed but it was comforting to be organized and confident I had ample proof and wouldn't be asked for additional evidence.
This whole visa process is stressful and nerve wracking but the interview was the easiest part. I was nervous and stressing about making sure I didn't forget anything or make any mistakes on the paper work and the process is finally almost over. I know there is a lot more to be done once I arrive and get married and file for the Adjustment of Status but at least I will FINALLY be with the man I love more than anything.
For anyone considering a lawyer or having help filing, If you follow the instructions and advice of fellow VJ'ers it is possible to get through this stressful process without wasting a bunch of money. The government websites can be quite confusing and even contradictory in some places, but this forum has been an absolute blessing in making this process as painless as possible. Answers to every question I could think of, guides and real experiences of others who are going through or have gone through the same processes.
Thank you again to everyone who is a part of VisaJourney! And to those of you still waiting for your interviews or in the process of your visa applications, Good Luck and hang in there. It is a long journey but for the one you love, it is worth it and eventually the distance will be overcome. You can do it! javascript:emoticon(' ')

Timeline Comments: None yet, be the first!
*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the
USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
