Consulate Review: Mumbai, India
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : September 23, 2013
Embassy Review : Today, my fiance had his interview at Mumbai consulate. We would like to share his experience to help others to understand the situation and overall experience.

My fiance had his interview scheduled at 07:30 AM. He lives in Pune so he decided to travel in the night and attend the interview directly without staying in a nearby hotel. He had around 1000 pages in documents so he was carrying a bag and, of course, a cellphone. He had inquired earlier and came to know that there is a service provided by VFS known as "The Stars and Stripes Lounge" where you can deposit all your stuff which is not allowed in US consulate. The lounge opens at 06:30 AM and located at "Trade Center, Ground Floor, Bandra Kurla Complex". They have multiple services and if you just want to use their locker services then you need to pay 200 INR. If you want to use all of their services which includes Locker, Transportation to US Consulate, Refreshment service and Kiosk Service then you have to pay 400 INR. The rate list is mentioned there and you can choose accordingly. The VFS people were attentive and handled and listened to my Fiance's queries patiently and answered and responded accordingly. My fiance submitted his cellphone and backpack there and carried a piano folder containing 1000 pages which is allowed to carry inside the US consulate. Please go through the security regulations of Mumbai US Consulate for more information.

VFS people transported him in a private taxi as he was the only immigrant applicant scheduled at 07:30 AM in morning otherwise generally they transfer you in a mini bus. My fiance left the lounge and reached US Consulate by 07:10 AM which is only 1.5 Km away from the lounge. There was a huge line and applicants were categorized in 2 lines, one was for non-immigrant and second one was for immigrant applicants. Please note that K1 visa is considered as Immigrant applicant so you have to be in the line for Immigrant applicants. Please take out your interview letter as they would ask and check for your time.

Once you enter the building then you have to put all your stuff in a big square tub which includes your paperwork, wallet/purse, watch and anything else. Basically, you can't have anything on you before you pass through the security where you will be personally frisked by security. This process is very similar to one you go through at the airport. Once your stuff comes via X-ray then you collect it and proceed through to an outdoor area between buildings.

Once you reach the (covered) outdoor area which has seating arrangements then VFS people ask you if you are a non-immigrant applicant then you have to sit there and if you are an immigrant applicant then you are asked to go to inside the adjacent building (eventually everyone goes in there, its just immigrant applicants are given preference over non-immigrant ones).

Once you enter in the building then you will be asked to take out your passport and interview letter and get in front of a window counter in a queue where you will be assigned a token number and they will stick it on your interview letter. You will be asked to go ahead and take a seat and watch the big screen in front of sitting area. They have in total of 18 windows and you have to watch out for token number on the screen.

My fiance was called after 25 minutes and asked to submit his Packet-4. They didn't even bother with packet-3 or it's documents (he asked if he should present it and they told him 'no'). The person who was collecting the documents was very impressed with my fiance's arrangement order and appreciated it and asked him to have a seat again and watch the screen again for his token number. After 20 minutes, he was called for again and there was an Indian man with all the documents which were submitted earlier at the window counter. He asked my fiance to write the petitioner's name on 156-k as my fiance didn't write on the bottom where it asks you not to write anything. He then asked my fiance a couple of questions like: what does the petitioner do, how did we meet and when we first started talking. He then asked my fiance that whether he has any pictures to which my fiance took out the pictures of us and submitted to him to look over. After he looked at them, he then took my fiance's finger prints and asked him to again sit down and wait for his token number.

Nearly 3.5 hours then passed before his number was finally called again. Almost everyone else from the morning slot (maybe 70-80 people) was done and only he and about 15 people remained at this point. He checked with the VFS guy and received a standard response saying that everyone's interview will be done and he was to keep watching the big screen for his number. Finally at 11:15am, his number came up on screen and he was called to window 11. My fiance gathered his stuff and went to window 11 where there was an American male officer was waiting for him. The interviewer asked my fiance to raise his right hand and asked him to take oath for providing correct information. Below are the specific questions asked during the interview:

1. What is the name of your fiancee?
2. How did you guys meet?
3. How did you start interacting?
4. When did you become friends?
5. When did you first meet your fiancee?
6. How many times has she visited India?
7. What does she do?
8. Where does she work?
9. Does it bother you that your fiancee is older than you? and how much older is she to you?
10. Why do you want to marry in USA?
11. Have you ever traveled outside of India?
12. Have you ever applied to USA visa?
13. Why did you want to go to USA earlier?
14. Do you have any plans for the wedding? (Fiance told him yes and offered him the email chain between the wedding venue and us along with the email chain with the jeweler)
15. How did you propose to her?
16. Are your parents aware about this relationship?
17. Will your parents attend the wedding?

During this interview, an American women walked up to the IO (interview officer) with my fiance's passport in her hand and IO muted the microphone and discussed something and then the interview continued (the woman took the passport with her). Again, there was a interruption after some time with the IO and after some discussion with the other person the interview continued. His passport was then brought back sometime later and left with the IO.

While my fiance was answering the question about his parents attending the wedding, IO picked up his passport and said the magic words. He said, "Thank You Sir, you will receive your passport in 2 weeks and I wish you a happy stay in the USA and hope you will have a good life there."

This was it and my fiance was overwhelmed and he thanked the IO and left the premises. He was taken back to VFS lounge by the VFS vehicles waiting outside US consulate where he retrieved his belongings and called me.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
