Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : November 30, 2013
Embassy Review : My interview was November 25th,
I drove to Montreal from Ontario and got a room at the Days Inn the night before. It was about 6 blocks from the consulate, but fairly inexpensive considering the other rates nearer were $160 a night. The room was nice, beds comfortable, the heater and bathroom vent were loud so I just shut them off. The underground parking was hard to navigate.
I got up early the next morning, 5am. Got dressed and packed because I was checking out then. I spoke with the front desk and they said it wouldn't be a problem for my car to stay until 4pm. He offered to call me a cab, because it was cold.
Loaded up the car trunk and walked to the consulate. It was chilly but not as cold as I had figured...I arrived in front of the consulate about 5:45am, and then I waited...and waited...and waited. But I am used to waiting now.
If I had to do it again I wouldn't have gotten there so early, but I have read a lot of reviews that say to be there by 6, honestly I think if you were there at 7:30 or even closer to 8, the line was not that long, and montreal the end of November is very cold.
They opened up the door at about 7:30ish I'm not sure what time it was because I left my phone in my trunk.
I was the first one there so I was the first one inside. A woman just inside the door asked for my courier registration which I handed to her after her repeating a couple times (language barrier) They had me remove my coat and zipped up sweater, empty my pockets, they took my car keys because of the Dongle and gave me a ticket to get them back after. Put me through the metal detector and then I put everything back on they gave me my envelope back. and told me to wait downstairs.

I waited by the elevator, then I suppose it was 8 they came and allowed us onto the elevator. I was the first in but one of the last off. The elevator doors open at the BACK....A little disgruntled, last in line, but glad to be there finally we were told to wait in line (left as you come off the elevator) and get a ticket...these are kinda the same numbered tickets you would get in a butcher shop or bakery... or hospitals now days.
Mine was A11...First one there number 11 now...but I'm there! The end of this long long process is almost here.
My number was called about 8:45 and I was called to window 3.
The Lady behind the window was training a new employee. She asked for my confirmation and my passport, I handed them to her under the glass. I could see my folder with everything that I had sent in in my package 3.
I had affixed my passport pictures to the forms already so they didn't ask for them even though I had more taken. They took my long form birth certificate and made a copy of it. They asked for the originals of my affidavits of support.
There was some misunderstanding because my fiancée had sent in the K1 with my middle name spelt with an H in Nicole (Nichol). Then she asked if I had his Birth certificate, I passed that to her I had sent in my pictures and proof of relationship with my packet 3 as well, so they didn't ask for more.
And then she asked for my original criminal record check. Gave that, and she checked off everything and told me to go sit down and wait for my number to be called again.
I sat back down, the first lady was only there to check my paperwork.

I had enough time to cross my legs and A11 was called again this time to window 11.

The man behind the glass (glasses, clean cut, mid twenties)
Asked me how my day was going, I said "it was a little cold this morning" he replied "you're not kidding, I just moved here 2 weeks ago and..." he trailed off.
He had me read the declaration that everything I said was true.
After that his demeanor changed to dismissive, disinterested and sometimes downright rude. But I suppose that's his job to try and get a rile out of me.
Or make me make some kind of blunder.
Such as "were you ever married?"
"no"
" Was your fiancée?"
"yes"
"what happened?"
I explained that his ex wife committed adultery and he ended the marriage
That wasn't good enough..."if you know your fiancée then you should know what happened in his previous marriage and why it ended"
Ok so I told him all of it. Everything.
Then disinterested again. He only wanted to know if I KNEW.
There was a few more times like that, such as where I would live once I got there, I told him the monthly rent and he seemed incredulous and I was pulling out the lease agreement, because I knew we needed proof of domicile and he dismissed it, didn't want it...most of the papers I had they didn't want or need. Then he looked at his computer for what seemed like 5 minutes, and I was starting to get worried.
And then he shoved a piece of paper at me that said Welcome to America.
I looked at him and he said "When you go across the border, especially if you are going by plane, give an additional 3 hours for processing of the visa."

Shell-shocked I walked back to the elevator and took a cab to my hotel ($6). Texted my sweetheart that "I GOT IT!" and drove home. I was back at the hotel by 9:15.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
