Consulate Review: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : December 20, 2014
Embassy Review : Basically ok; not much to complain about.

Strange is that all immigration interviews in Brazil are in Rio de Janeiro. Rio is a historical place with little actual economic importance. Sao Paulo is /the/ hub in Brazil (that is, in all of South America); the consulate there would be a much more logical place to hold the interviews.

Also strange are the shipping procedures for the passport. After the interview you have to go to a postal office to pay for shipping there, then bring the voucher back. This feels like a really outdated procedure. Collect the money in the consulate, and just ship it. This probably would be easier on all involved; it definitely would be easier on this end.

And really strange is how they treat marriage. We got married formally shortly before the visa procedures, but have lived in a common law marriage for quite a while. They told us that they are not interested in any evidence that we are actually married for a long time; they only go by the marriage certificate and the date on that. They very clearly prefer a fake marriage of a year over a real marriage of a lifetime (that has been registered only recently) any day of the week.

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
