Consulate Review: Vancouver, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : December 4, 2012
Embassy Review : We were told not to arrive more than 20 min before our 10:00am appt. We walked over at 9:30. There were a lot of people lined up already but when we told them we were there for K-1 they knew who we were and directed us to the front. I think there were only 3 K-1 interviews that day. We met 1 of the other 2. He did not know about Visa Journey and used an attorney. A mistake as he was not as prepared as we were. He did not know he had to bring the sealed medical envelope and did not have the proper Birth Certificate.

They let us in the building after about 10 minutes (good thing as the temp that morning was 34 deg F) we went through a security check (no purses or cell phones allowed) and then escorted up an elevator to the 20th floor. They sent us to window B, collected our documents (complimented us on our organization) and told us to sit down. 15 minutes later she called us back. She instructed me to be quiet and then asked Jordan to say and spell my last, then first and then middle name. He did good. She commented that many do not know the middle name. (1st test passed!) We were then handed a number “A128” and told to sit back down. Luckily this time we found chairs. (the room was small and full and we had to sit on the floor the first time). They were calling A079 at that time. Ugh. I think it must have been another hour and a half before they got to 128.

We were called to window #2 (where we had been listening to the guy being quite tough on other visa applicants) both of us ready to faint, and lay our stuff on the counter and get ready for the worst. The guy swears Jordan in and then asks “How did you meet?” Jordan, sounding scared to death starts out “In May of 2008….” Then the guy laughs and says “don’t worry, this isn’t a test, you can relax” After that he was very friendly, even joking with us. Hugh relief at this point (looking back I think we were already approved before we got to the window) He then asked each of us what we did for a living and with that we explained how I visited him often on the ship. The last question was the one I probably didn’t expect… “So….why do you want to get married?” I was worried but Jordan gave a great answer about how much we had in common and how much fun we had together (he scored big brownie points with that response).

He then asked about the May incident where Jordan was not allowed to enter for a visit, which we were very nervous about, and said “it’s not a big deal, people who admit to serious relationships are usually stopped” and I mentioned that it’s tough to have ties to Canada when you work on Cruise ships. He laughed and said “yep” He said it’s quite common and nothing to worry about and followed that up with “and I’m approving your visa” I said WHAT? He said “You’re Approved!” At that point I cried and I think I heard a sob out of Jordan too.

They sent us back to Window B for further instructions on what will happen next and that was it. We walked out 10 minutes after 12:00.

Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
