Port of Entry : Toronto
POE Date : 2012-10-14
Got EAD Stamp :
Biometrics Taken : Yes
Harassment Level : 0
Comments : The first customs officer took my files, read stuff on screen for a while, asked me if I've ever overstayed, then took my fingerprints, but just one side, before sending me to secondary inspection. Second officer gave me I-94 to fill out, while he inspected the contents of my package, he only asked me to confirm my fiance's name, didn't ask anything else. He filled in the remaining information on the I-94 (e.g. passport expiration date, since he was holding on to my passport), stapled the departure card into my passport and let me through. He held on to the package.

Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : October 4, 2012
Embassy Review : Process was similar to what previous reviewers have written. My fiancé and I got there a few minutes after 7am and were third in line. We stayed at the Westin, which was less than a 10 minute walk over. We only had a folder of our documents, and wallet and hotel keys in our pockets. Multiple signs clearly state no cell phones or electronics of any kind, food, backpacks or large purses, or liquids. The woman after us had a small-ish purse, and she was fine, but another woman who came later had a medium-sized purse, and I noticed she showed up a half hour later with no purse.

When we were waiting outside was exactly the same time construction workers started tearing up the road for repaving, so there was asphalt being spewed into the air, and foul smelling dust, along with half a dozen trucks backing up and down the road. Be glad you won't have this experience!

Shortly after 7:30 security let us in, and we gave the attendant at the door our appointment letter and passports, she had a bunch of stickers already printed with my passport number and Loomis number, which she stuck on the back up my passport.

We went through security, had to take off coat, watch and belt, but not shoes. I had three wrapped candy chocolates, but they didn't make me throw it out. Walked downstairs, there are arrows on the floor pointing to the elevator, and sat down.

Shortly after 8, security came and escorted everyone into the elevator up to the 14th floor, which is a great view, but today was foggy. We were near the back of the elevator, and the back doors opened, but another lady had gone to the back as well, and we were now fourth in line, waiting at window 14. Showed again appointment letter and passport, got C4 ticket and waited. After a while, they called C1 to C3, then C7 to windows 1 to 3, so it wasn't in order at all.

We were eventually called up. Lady there went to get my file, and asked for passport and medical. My medical contained a CD, which she gave back to me to keep, apparently it's my chest X-rays. I don't have an original birth certificate (I was born in China), but she accepted the photocopy of my notarial certificate and an affidavit from my mother. She asked for my police record, and put these all in the file. She then took my fingerprints, and we were told to go wait.

For the interview, we were the 4th to be called. Lady swore us in, asked when I was last in the US, if I had any trouble getting into the US before (I used to travel to the US almost every month for business), if I've ever overstayed my visa (more than 6 months?), if I've lived anywhere else, asked my fiancé when he moved back to US (he was living in Canada for the previous 4 years where we met and dated), asked when he proposed, asked me when and how we met. I described it very generally, and she didn't ask for details nor ask to see any evidence, nor asked for Affidavit of Support. She just asked for the Fiance Letter of Intent, took one set of fingerprints again, and gave me back my birth documentation, and gave me further instructions and told us we were approved!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
