Consulate Review: Belgium
Review Topic: IR-1/CR-1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : June 6, 2012
Embassy Review : We arrived an hour early at the Brussels embassy, where the visa processing starts at 2pm. At 1.15pm we were able to enter the premises to stand in line. We were 2nd in line and first for the visa processing queue. you need to stand outside (covered), no chairs or seats are available.
We entered the embassy at 1.45pm and went through the typical airport checkpoint. bag, coats, etc are sent through the x-ray machine and all electronics, keys, etc need to be left behind. you do receive a ticket for it.

once entered the waiting room (you can watch CNN), you are called to the visa window (it can take some time if you're not first in line), where a friendly trilingual lady checks the file you've sent earlier to USCIS & NVC. Every document is looked at an in our case, special attention was given to form I-864 (sponsor) as we are relying on assets to meet the poverty line requirement.
Additional originals can be given at this time, but you can also get back originals you've submitted earlier. They do not propose this themselves.

We did offer the 2011 tax return, but that caused confusion as it wasn't the same as mentioned on the I-864 form. We requested it back as it was needed at this moment to deliver it and we didn't want to raise more questions than needed.

The lady at the window also explains in detail what will happen then and how to proceed when arrived in the States.
they prepare the file for the vice-consul (@ window 2) while you're seated, watching CNN.

Next step is the interview with the vice-consul. we were happy it wasn't the consul himself as the man is unable to smile and has NO sense of humor at all! we encountered him earlier in the process...

Anyhow the interview with the vice-counsul was smooth. he asked some question about our relation, after he took our oath.
-where we met
-how long we have known each other
-what we were planning on doing in the US
-where we were going to live.

and then in relation to our financial situation
-how much our assets where worth
-what is the remaing mortgage value
-the amount of cash available

and then... he bows his faces downwards, coughs, he's bald head is turning red...and we felt a little panic coming.
He goes away, it took some time to return, while we were standing there unknowing what the result would be.
He returned to his chair, faces us again and shoves some papers to us to sign.
He concluded by wishing us all the best.

After all, it was smooth and all personal was helpful and friendly.

We celebrated by getting ourseleves a Haagen Das ice cream in the sun javascript:emoticon('')
Rating : Very Good

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
